El Almendro: Church, Landscape and Trails

Culture

The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe is listed in El Almendro as an Asset of Cultural Interest in the Monument category. It is the oldest building in El Almendro. The origins of its construction date back to the 16th century. Its original layout comprises three naves with columns and a wooden Mudejar roof structure.

Molino Pie de Castillo is a grain mill in El Almendro. It is one of the few surviving mills from the 18th century. The church and mill thus point to two different historical building periods in the town, while the church, with its three naves, columns and wooden Mudejar roof structure, has also preserved its original architectural layout.

The Danza de los Cirochos is also part of the town’s cultural identity and is known by the name Sirocos. It honours the Virgen de Piedras Albas, the patron saint of El Almendro and Villanueva de los Castillejos. The dance was performed in the festive religious context of the Romería de la Virgen de Piedras Albas.

The route of the Danza passes by the Ermita de la Virgen de Piedras Albas. This route also includes the surroundings of the Ermita in the Prado de Osma. In addition, the Danza passes through the town centres of El Almendro and Villanueva de los Castillejos.

Landscape

Peña Maya, a geological formation from the Quaternary period, is located at the northern edge of El Almendro’s town centre. The formation is approximately 100 metres high and has a rugged shape. From the summit of Peña Maya, there are views of El Almendro and Villanueva de los Castillejos.

For the Sendero, both directional signs and trail markers are mentioned in addition to the information panel at the start. Within the municipality, the Vía Verde is designated as being 3.20 kilometres long.
