Arroyo Frío: Nature, Hiking Trails and August Festival

Nature

Arroyo Frío is the starting point for the Arroyo Frío–Cerrada del Utrero hiking trail. This trail belongs to the “Rutas del Agua” group and runs along the upper Guadalquivir. Dense riverside vegetation accompanies the route.

At the end of the hiking trail lies the Cerrada del Utrero. There, the Guadalquivir has carved a deep gorge. Nightingales (Luscinia megarhynchos) and golden orioles live along the banks of the trail. Thus, this route brings together a named watercourse, a densely vegetated riverside area and a striking gorge, while the two bird species mentioned use the riverside area as their habitat.

Activities

From Cazorla, the A-319 road leads to Arroyo Frío, the starting point for the Arroyo Frío–Cerrada del Utrero hiking trail. The Puerto de las Palomas–Arroyo Frío route covers almost 400 metres of elevation gain. This route is less than three kilometres long. The “Derivación 04: Puerto de las Palomas–Arroyo Frío” route crosses the Guadalquivir in its upper reaches, reaches Arroyo Frío and connects to the “Bosques del Sur” hiking trail. Its course therefore includes both the upper-reach section of the river and the village of Arroyo Frío, as well as the stated connection to “Bosques del Sur”.

Culture

From 13 to 15 August, the festival in honour of the Assumption of Mary is celebrated. The celebration takes place in Arroyo Frío and El Palmar. The festival combines the three-day period in August with both of the places mentioned.
