Culture and History

The Catedral de Jaén is considered a masterpiece by Andrés de Vandelvira and one of the most important Renaissance works in Andalusia. The Arab Baths were built in the 11th century beneath the Villardompardo Palace. The complex covers 450 square metres and is believed to be the largest visitable complex of its kind in Spain.

The Alcázar Nuevo of the Castillo de Santa Catalina, built after the Christian conquest of 1246, preserves its original masonry enclosure with six towers. The Museo Íbero de Jaén opened on 11 December 2017 and was created as a museum to house the most important material evidence of Iberian culture. The fortified Oppidum de Puente Tablas is located 4 kilometres from Jaén; its most important archaeological phase belongs to the Iberian period, mainly the 4th century BC.

In the vicinity of Jaén are the Museo Banco España, the Museo Internacional de Arte Íbero and the Museo Provincial. The Museo de Jaén is also located in the vicinity of Jaén and houses a large portion of the archaeological finds discovered in the province. The Mirador Cruz del Castllo de Santa Catalina is a viewpoint in the vicinity of Jaén.

Routes and Cultural Perspectives

The Castillos y Batallas del Reino de Jaén cultural and tourism offering includes visitable monuments and signposted routes. The Camino Mozárabe de Santiago passes through Jaén and is part of one of the oldest pilgrimage routes to Santiago in Andalusia. Jaén is also part of the Red de Juderías de España – Caminos de Sefarad, an initiative to preserve and promote Jewish heritage.

The starting point of the Vía Verde del Aceite in Jaén is located at the Las Fuentezuelas sports complex, near the current railway line. The Centro de Dinamización Turística is an information centre providing an overview of the province of Jaén. Olive oil tastings are offered at Paraíso Virgen Extra.

Nature and Events

Sierra Mágina is one of the four nature parks highlighted for Jaén. Cerro Jabalcuz is a mountain in the wider regional surroundings of Jaén. Parque Andrés de Vandelvira and Parque del Bulevar are parks in the vicinity of Jaén. Semana Santa de Jaén is one of the highlighted events in Jaén.
