Hornos: Castle, Cosmolarium and Landscape at El Tranco Reservoir

The Castle of Hornos was classified as a Bien de Interés Cultural (Asset of Cultural Interest) in 1985. The Puerta de la Villa was also classified as a Bien de Interés Cultural in 1985.

Culture and History

The Christian castle complex of Hornos dates from between the second half of the 13th century and the early 14th century. The castle includes a cistern from an earlier Muslim structure.

The parish church of the Assumption of Mary is located in the centre of Hornos's historic and artistic ensemble. Most of the construction work on the parish church was carried out between 1523 and 1550 in the Gothic style.

The Puerta de la Villa has an angled entrance, suggesting a probably Almohad origin.

The castle can be reached on foot from several car parks at the entrance to the town. Access is well signposted.

The Cosmolarium has a digital planetarium dome with a diameter of eight metres. The Cosmolarium features exhibitions about the universe, rooms for workshops and educational games. The Cosmolarium offers planetarium sessions and guided tours. Activities include observing the night sky from a terrace.

In mid-August, the patron saint's festivities are celebrated in Hornos de Segura. They are held in honour of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción and San Roque. On the eve of the feast of the holy abbot, bonfires were lit in Hornos. People sang and danced around these bonfires. Food and drink were also enjoyed.

Nature and Views

El Tranco Reservoir forms a tranquil inland waterscape between pine forests and olive groves. Hornos has a recreational and walking area. This area includes benches and a water source.

Hornos has a walking area with a viewpoint. From there, there are views of the town and El Tranco Reservoir. The Mirador de la Gloria offers views of the natural park and the waters of El Tranco Reservoir.

Regional Cuisine

Ajo de harina is a dish prepared in Hornos. It is made with potatoes, vegetables and saffron milk cap mushrooms from the mountains.

Gachamigas is a traditional dish of the Sierra area. The dish is also associated with Hornos and consists of flour and potatoes.

Cuerva is a traditional drink of the area. The drink consists of wine, water, plenty of sugar and pieces of fruit.
