Rus: Churches, Roman Villas and Hiking Trails

Culture

In Rus, the Iglesia Parroquial de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción features three naves divided by columns, two bays and decorated flat vaults. The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción is registered in Andalusia as a monument and as a Bien de Interés Cultural. It was probably built between 1565 and 1576 according to the architectural principles of the Vandelvira school. The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción currently serves as a venue for cultural events.

The urban origins of Rus are associated with an earlier castle. A cylindrical tower made of rubble masonry has been preserved on Calle Iglesia; it has a circumference of twelve metres and dates from the second half of the 13th century. The Oratorio Rupestre de Valdecanales was declared a Bien de Interés Cultural and placed under protection in 1970.

The Villa Romana de Valcuenda includes a raised grain store known as a horreum. The Villa Romana de Valcuenda was an agricultural estate from the Roman imperial period with facilities for producing oil and wine. The Villa Romana de El Altillo was discovered in 2021 and features a 19-by-8-metre mosaic, one of the largest in the south of the Iberian Peninsula.

The Museo Fosforina is a private collection of more than 3,000 objects relating to the history of traditional crafts. The Hipogeo de Valdecanales Information Centre provides large information panels, maps and guidebooks about local festivals, sights, and the artistic and monumental heritage of Rus.

Nature

La Lambra is a natural area in the municipality of Rus and is suitable for a day trip into the surrounding countryside. La Lambra is four kilometres from Rus and can be reached directly from the town centre by car or on foot via the Camino del Cementerio.

The Pantano de Giribaile extends at the foot of the La Lambra natural area in Rus across the municipalities of Ibros, Vilches, Rus, Canena, Úbeda, Navas de San Juan and Sabiote. It receives the waters of the Guadalimar, which belongs to the Guadalquivir river system.

Hiking

The Ruta de los Caracoles consists of four hiking routes. The Algarrobo–Franjana Obispalía route is 13 kilometres long, takes approximately five and a half hours and has an elevation gain of 330 metres.

The Ruta de los Caracoles passes rural dry-stone structures. These were probably used mainly to monitor vineyards and almond groves, store agricultural equipment and provide shelter from the rain.

Festivals

A special celebration in Rus takes place on the third Sunday in September and comprises three days of masked traditional festivities. During these celebrations, residents publicly express their ideas, mockery and criticism. Their origins probably date back to the 17th century, roughly between 1678 and 1693.
