Ventas del Carrizal: Mozarabic Way and Sierra de San Pedro
Landscape and location
Ventas del Carrizal lies at the foot of the Sierra de San Pedro. The village is located on the N-432 national road between Alcalá la Real and Alcaudete. Both names mark the section of road on which Ventas del Carrizal is situated along the N-432.
Pilgrimage route and information
The Camino Mozárabe de Santiago passes through Ventas del Carrizal. On the Alcalá la Real–Alcaudete stage, this route runs through the village. From the built-up area of Ventas del Carrizal, the Camino leads downhill along Calle La Fuente to the RÃo San Juan. The route therefore connects the built-up area, Calle La Fuente, and the RÃo San Juan along this course.
The Camino reaches Ventas del Carrizal via a crossing at a traffic light. The Centro de Servicios Sociales is an information point for pilgrims on the Camino Mozárabe de Santiago in Ventas del Carrizal.
History and archaeological traces
Cabeza Baja de Encina Hermosa was an Iberian oppidum. Later, Cabeza Baja de Encina Hermosa was a Roman vicus from the 1st and 2nd centuries. Its historical classification therefore encompasses an Iberian settlement form and later Roman use during these two centuries.
From Ventas del Carrizal, Cabeza Baja de Encina Hermosa can be reached via the path of the Cortijo del Baño. The path of the Cortijo del Baño provides the connection between Ventas del Carrizal and the archaeological site.
Memorial site and religious tradition
The Tumba del Santo Manuel is located in the cemetery of Ventas del Carrizal. The Tumba del Santo Manuel is a major attraction of the comarca. It is also one of the most important points on the Ruta de los Milagros y Santones de la Sierra Sur.
The Tumba del Santo Manuel is particularly visited on the anniversary of Manuel López Cano’s death. The tomb is also visited on All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day. The anniversary of Manuel López Cano’s death and the two religious observances are special times to visit.
Annual festivals
The Fiesta del Emigrante lasts approximately three or four days and includes activities for all age groups.
The Fiesta de San Antonio is celebrated in Ventas del Carrizal on June 13 and 14.
Routes and regional products
The second stage of the Ruta del Aceite ends with a final descent to Ventas del Carrizal. On the Castillo de LocubÃn–Alcaudete stage, there are usually mobile sales outlets in Ventas del Carrizal. These mobile sales outlets offer typical vegetables and other horticultural products from the region.
