Úbeda: Renaissance, Ceramics and Olive Groves

The walled town of Úbeda has preserved the overall character of its traditional residential architecture, which has developed since the Middle Ages. At the same time, Úbeda developed outstanding aristocratic architecture.

The UNESCO World Heritage property is called “Renaissance Monumental Ensembles of Úbeda and Baeza” and was inscribed on the World Heritage List in 2003. Plaza Vázquez de Molina is surrounded by secular and religious buildings constructed between 1530 and 1580.

Plaza Vázquez de Molina is home to the Sacra Capilla de El Salvador. The chapel’s floor plan was designed by Diego de Siloé; its Plateresque-style portal was created by Vandelvira. The Hospital de Santiago is known as the “Andalusian El Escorial”.

Crafts and Museum

Úbeda has one of the largest concentrations of traditional craft businesses in Andalusia. This concentration is also among the most diverse in Andalusia, and most of the workshops are family businesses. Their origins are connected with the founding of the town. Úbeda also has a historically documented pottery tradition, whose origins are likewise connected with the founding of the town.

The Museo Arqueológico de Úbeda is housed in a 14th-century Mudéjar house. The museum displays Iberian and Roman finds from archaeological sites in Úbeda.

Events

The Festival Internacional de Música y Danza “Ciudad de Úbeda” features concerts in various squares in the town’s historic centre.

During the first quarter of the year, dishes can be sampled at participating restaurants as part of the “Jornadas Gastronómicas 'En el Renacimiento' de Úbeda”.

Landscape and Routes

Olive groves characterise the surroundings of Úbeda and are part of the town’s visitor experience. Úbeda’s historic centre is best explored on foot. The Úbeda bus station is next to the old town and can be reached on foot from the main tourist attractions in five to 20 minutes.
