Virgen De La Cabeza: Sanctuary, Nature and Romería

Virgen De La Cabeza combines natural surroundings, a sanctuary and trails into a destination with a distinct cultural and landscape character. The Basílica y Real Santuario de la Santísima Virgen de la Cabeza is located in the Parque Natural de la Sierra de Andújar, in the area known as Cerro del Cabezo. This places the religious centre and the nature park in the same geographical setting.

Landscape Between Forest and Dehesa

The Parque Natural Sierra de Andújar provides a refuge between Mediterranean forest and dehesas for endangered, characteristic species; at the same time, the park represents the hilly landscape typical of the Sierra Morena. The Sendero El Santuario passes through Mediterranean forest as well as dehesas with holm oaks and cork oaks. Two Trails, Two Routes

Two differently designed trails are available for orientation in the area. The Camino Viejo section: Tramo Santuario de Nuestra Señora de la Cabeza–Lugar Nuevo begins at Cerro del Cabezo and runs continuously downhill. The Circular Santuario–Río Jándula hiking route begins and ends in the square of the Santuario de la Virgen de la Cabeza. This makes it possible to compare a directional section with a circular route.

Visitor Centre and Museum

The Centro de recepción de visitantes Virgen de la Cabeza provides information about the monument, its religious heritage and the natural surroundings of the Parque Natural Sierra de Andújar. The Museo Mariano Virgen de la Cabeza is located in the Santuario. It presents a significant artistic, documentary and anthropological collection relating to the historical heritage of devotion to the Virgen de la Cabeza. The first room contains a 17th-century painting of the Romería.

Architectural History and Religious Heritage

The Basílica y Real Santuario de Nuestra Señora de la Cabeza was originally built between 1287 and 1304. After being almost completely destroyed during the last civil war, it was rebuilt and elevated to the status of Basilica minor by a papal brief on 21 April 2010. Architectural history and religious significance therefore come together in a building whose development encompasses several clearly identified periods.

The Romería Throughout the Year

The Romería de la Virgen de la Cabeza has been celebrated on the last Sunday in April since the first half of the 13th century. The Sunday celebration culminates in a procession of the Santísima Virgen de la Cabeza. Participants arrive on foot, on horseback, on mules or in wagons. The fixed date and the various forms of arrival are characteristic elements of this pilgrimage.

Getting There via Andújar

The A-6177 road connects Andújar with the Santuario and is the main access route to the Parque Natural Sierra de Andújar; the connection is 32 km long. As the main access route, it connects the transport route, sanctuary and natural surroundings in a single relationship.
