Hiking Trails Around Peñolite

Four circular hiking trails for families begin at Peñolite’s church square. The family routes run along well-maintained paths and tracks. 800 m after the start of the family route, the Fuente del Barranco Negro spring lies about 20 m to the left of the path; it is a drinking-water spring. The shared starting point in the village and the first section of the route form a concrete spatial beginning. The different route formats help with planning stages, while the church square and the spring provide two clearly recognisable landmarks.

The Cuerda de Lucas can be reached via the forest track between Peñolite and Cañada Catena. At its highest point, it reaches 1,143 m. The linear PR-A 189 hiking trail connects Arroyo del Ojanco with the hamlet of Peñolite and runs through the olive groves of the Sierra de Segura. Between Arroyo del Ojanco and Peñolite, PR-A 189 follows paved roads or forest tracks with little vehicle traffic. Circular trails, a linear connection and a named high point give the landscape different forms of paths.

Expansive Landscapes

The basin of the Arroyo de Peñolite offers panoramic views of the surroundings of the Cazorla, Segura y Las Villas Natural Park and the neighbouring Parque del Calar Alto in Albacete from the surrounding peaks. In the basin, west-facing sunsets can be seen with the landscape of the province of Jaén in the background. Two specific landscape motifs therefore stand out for observation: wide views across the surroundings and the western evening sky with Jaén in the background.

Towers and Churches in the Village Setting

Two freestanding towers, wall remains and a third tower integrated into the walls of a derelict farmhouse have survived from the fortified settlement of Peñolite. The surviving towers of Peñolite belong to a Hispano-Muslim fortified settlement dating from the 12th century. The architectural traces combine freestanding towers, wall remains and an integrated tower into a clearly recognisable historical village motif.

The Iglesia de San Juan Bautista is a chapel in the centre of the Peñolite-Puente de Génave settlement. The Iglesia de Peñolite displays a certain character of Andalusian regionalism.

Festivals Throughout the Year

Peñolite celebrates its patronal festival in honour of San Juan on 24 June. Sporting, cultural and social activities are organised on the days before and after 24 June for the festival of San Juan Bautista. San Antón is Peñolite’s second patron saint; his festival is celebrated in Peñolite on 17 January. 24 June and 17 January therefore mark two fixed dates in the village’s annual cultural calendar.

At the beginning of summer, the municipal El Balcón de Peñolite swimming pool opened its leisure facilities. Alongside hiking trails, landscapes, historic structures and festivals, a seasonal leisure facility is therefore also one of Peñolite’s specific local features.
