Historic Centre and Ceramics Tradition
In Andújar, the city’s history, ceramics culture and Sierra de Andújar Nature Park are presented as distinct, clearly recognisable themes. The historic centre of Andújar has been designated an Asset of Cultural Interest since 2007. The Centro de Interpretación de la Cerámica “JARDÍN DEL ALFARERO” offers a dedicated way to explore the city’s history. It presents Andújar’s pottery tradition from the Bronze Age to the present day; the exhibition includes more than 200 ceramic pieces.
The Museo Arqueológico Profesor Sotomayor also focuses on the municipality’s past. It provides an insight into its archaeology and history and displays significant pieces from the Iberian, Roman and Visigothic cultures that shaped its historical heritage. The museum is housed in the Palacio Niños de Don Gome. In Andújar, ceramics, archaeology and the architectural evidence of different periods can therefore be viewed as distinct cultural focal points.
Routes, Sanctuary and Nature Park
The Sierra de Andújar Nature Park is suitable for environmentally responsible activities such as hiking and mountain biking. A specific historical route connection is provided by the Old Road to the Sanctuary, which begins in Andújar on the road from San Amancio. The A-6177 connects Andújar with the sanctuary and is the main access route to the Sierra de Andújar Nature Park.
The basilica and the Royal Sanctuary of the Virgen de la Cabeza are located in the Sierra de Andújar Nature Park. Both were originally built between 1287 and 1304. The pilgrimage of the Virgen de la Cabeza has been celebrated on the last Sunday in April since the first half of the 13th century. The basilica building also houses the Museo Mariano, with a significant artistic, documentary and anthropological collection relating to the historical heritage through which devotion to the Virgen de la Cabeza has developed over the centuries. Bridge in the Landscape
Another structure in the nature park is the Puente Viejo del Jándula, also known as the Puente del Mocho. It stands in the heart of the Sierra de Andújar Nature Park on the Lugar Nuevo estate. The present Puente Viejo del Jándula dates from the 17th century and has semicircular cutwaters. Its name, location in the nature park and historic construction add a further architectural connection to the landscape.
