Arbuniel: Water, Routes and Olive Landscape

Nature and Water

The Nacimiento del río Arbuniel, also known as El Nacimiento del Agua, lies at the foot of Monte Torre de Gallarín.

This spring is located within the Sierra Mágina region, near the town center of Arbuniel (Cambil).

Ducks, crayfish, and numerous trout can be seen along the watercourse.

There is a picnic area at the Nacimiento del río Arbuniel.

The picnic area includes barbecue facilities, benches, and tables.

The facilities there also include waste bins.

The area also has a small bar and a children’s playground.

At the Nacimiento, the watercourse, wildlife observation, and picnic area come together at a named site. In the surroundings of the Central Hidroeléctrica de S. Cayetano, by contrast, the theme of water is reflected in pipes, channels, sluice gates, and the red pipeline.

Routes and Landscape

Arbuniel lies on a plateau more than 900 meters high.

The town has wide, straight streets.

Along the “Los Tesoros de Arbuniel” route, distinctive travertine formations of Torcal rise up.

The route begins at the Ermita de Arbuniel.

From there, it follows an old sunken lane.

The sunken lane passes through gardens and olive groves.

The route extends to the Cortijo and livestock shelter of El Torcal.

The “Arbuniel a través del agua” walking tour conveys the history of Arbuniel.

It also conveys the continuing importance of water to local life.

Culture and History

The Iglesia de San Juan Bautista in Arbuniel was completed on September 28, 1895.

The Lavadero del Nacimiento is the first of four surviving washhouses in Arbuniel.

Arbuniel’s patron saint festivities take place in May.

They are held in honor of Nuestro Padre Jesús Nazareno.

The Central Hidroeléctrica de S. Cayetano, also known as Sacromonte Alto, was built in 1922.

After being converted into a grain mill, it remains almost fully functional.

The facility is also well preserved.

At Cayetano, water pipes, channels, sluice gates, and the large red-painted pipeline from the former hydroelectric system can be seen.

Olives and Agriculture

The El Trueno olive farm in Arbuniel organizes tours.
