Chilluévar between Nature Park and Olive-Growing Landscape
Chilluévar lies in the transition zone between the Sierra de Las Villas and the olive-growing landscape of the province of Jaén, in the Upper Guadalquivir Basin.
Nature
The municipality belongs to the Sierra de Cazorla district and the Sierra de Cazorla, Segura y las Villas Nature Park. It includes the four settlements of Los Romos, Las Almansas, Chilluévar la Vieja and el Noguero.
The Los VÃlchetes recreation area is located in Santo Tomé and can be reached from Chilluévar via the paved JH-7155 track in approximately 7 km.
In the wider regional surroundings of Chilluévar is Roble Hermosa, a peak. Blanquilla, a mountain, is also located in this wider regional area. Cabañas, a mountain, and the Sierra de Don Pedro, also a mountain, are located there as well.
Culture
The Roman bridge over the Cañamares River is 2.5 km from the town centre. It has a single opening with a semicircular arch and vertical side surfaces. It is considered one of the municipality's best-preserved cultural heritage sites.
The present-day parish church of Nuestra Señora de la Paz was completely rebuilt in the 1970s.
The Roman remains found in Las Almansas date from the 2nd and 3rd centuries. They are kept at the Museo Provincial de Jaén.
The Torreón de Nubla is one of the remains of past cultures. It is located on the left bank of the Cañamares River, at its confluence with the Cerezuelo River.
The cultural landscape therefore brings together several eras: Roman finds from Las Almansas, the Torreón de Nubla as a remnant of past cultures, and a parish church that was completely rebuilt only in the 1970s. The Roman bridge adds a preserved structure on the Cañamares to these remains.
In the wider regional surroundings of Chilluévar is Castillo de Sabiote, a castle. Palacio De Los Manueles is a palace there. Palacio del Marqués de Mancera, also a palace, is located there as well. The Museo Arqueologico De Ubeda is also in the wider regional area and is a museum.
Festivals
The patron saint's festival in honour of Nuestra Señora de la Paz is celebrated on 24 January. On the preceding night, large bonfires made from olive-tree pruning waste are built throughout the municipality.
On Corpus Christi, the residents of Chilluévar decorate the town's main streets with carpets and flower altars. The procession also takes place there.
In the week before the September festivals, Chilluévar hosts Semana Cultural. Various local associations take part and organise dances, exhibitions, theatre performances, football matches and horseback rides.
