Nature and Views

The municipality of Torres De Albánchez is located in the Sierras de Cazorla, Segura y Las Villas Nature Park. Limestone massifs around 1,200 to 1,300 m high surround the town and shape the landscape. More than 30 natural springs emerge from this mountainous area. Cerro del Castillo is a natural site at an altitude of 1,145 m. From there, panoramic views extend across the nature park and the town. Thus, the immediate landscape is defined both by the extensive limestone massifs and by the individual viewpoint at its named elevation. The approximate elevation of the surrounding mountains remains between 1,200 and 1,300 m.

Culture and History

For a glimpse into life in the town in earlier times, Los Lavaderos preserves evidence of the former communal laundry and social life in the town. The Torre del Homenaje dates from the 14th century. Information panels and models form part of its museum presentation. Construction of the Nuestra Señora de la Presentación church began in the 16th century. The square-ended apse was added in the 17th century. The Edades de la Sierra Interpretation Centre explains the geological history of the Sierra de Segura. The centre also explores the stages of human settlement. The historical themes therefore range from communal facilities and medieval architectural history to the geological development and human settlement of the Sierra.

Local Cuisine

Ajoatao is made by mashing boiled potatoes and preparing them with the olive oil of this area, eggs and garlic. The dish combines a potato base with regional olive oil and the two additional ingredients. Ajoharina is a very old mountain-cuisine stew. Its ingredients include flour, potatoes and fried vegetables. The stew is thickened in a frying pan. The two dishes demonstrate the range of the local mountain cuisine: Ajoatao is made from a mashed potato mixture, while Ajoharina is prepared as a stew in a frying pan.
