Beas de Segura – Culture, Nature and Festivals
The San José del Salvador Monastery was built in 1575. It was Saint Teresa’s tenth foundation and, at the same time, her first foundation in an Andalusian province. Beas de Segura belongs to the Huellas de Teresa de Jesús cultural and heritage network.
Culture and History
The Centro de Interpretación de la Villa de Beas was built on the ruins of the castle. It incorporates parts of its walls and architectural structures. Beas de Segura has a cultural interpretation centre and two municipal museums. The two municipal museums focus on different subjects. The cultural offering also includes the reliquary museum of the San José del Salvador Monastery.
The Museo de Usos y Costumbres de Antaño “Cantero” dedicates a large part of its exhibition space to agriculture and olive oil. The Museo-Relicario of the San José del Salvador Monastery is located in several monastery rooms. These rooms are open to the public.
The Beas de Segura tourist information office offers guided tours of the old town. This service is aimed at groups, individuals and school classes.

Nature
The Cueva del Agua de Beas is located 500 metres from the town centre. The cave consists of two chambers. A small but deep lake connects these two chambers.
Monte Fuente Pinilla lies within the nature park. Its landscape includes limestone peaks and a montane pine forest. Holm oaks also grow there; the ground vegetation consists of rosemary and juniper. Moist areas are also present there.
Paraje Valparaíso is a natural area by the Arroyo Valparaíso stream. The Arroyo Valparaíso flows into the Río Beas. Abundant water and, above all, riverside vegetation characterise the natural area. Tree-lined gardens, springs, a small stream and picnic areas are also part of it.
The Picos de Natao form a limestone plateau. They are located at an altitude of 1,274 metres and offer impressive panoramic views.
Festivals
The Fiestas de San Marcos are celebrated from 22 to 25 April. They are held in honour of the saint. Their history dates back to the 15th century.
The Fiestas de San Marcos include the release of a large number of tethered fighting bulls.
Since 2000, the Fiestas de San Marcos have been recognised as a Fiesta de Interés Turístico de Andalucía.
The festival is considered one of the finest expressions of the Sierra’s Christmas folk culture and takes place annually at the Teatro-Cine Regio in Beas de Segura.
Hiking
The Camino de San Juan de la Cruz is approximately 24 km long. It is a very challenging trail with significant changes in elevation and steep climbs.
