Torreperogil: Water Mines, Olive Groves and Culture

Water

During the guided tours of the Minas de Agua planned for the summer, participants can explore galleries, cavities and historic passageways built to extract and channel water. At the Centro de Interpretación de las Minas de Agua, visitors can learn about Roman construction techniques, the underground ecosystem and the importance of the mines to Torreperogil. Information is presented through a photo exhibition and an audiovisual presentation.

Culture and History

The Torres Oscuras are preserved parts of an old fortress. This fortress was built between 1230 and 1240. The parish church of Santa María is a Gothic church. Its construction extended over much of the 16th century. Santa María preserves two portals bearing the coat of arms of Merino. They are traditionally attributed to Diego de Alcaraz. The Camarín of the Ermita de la Virgen de la Misericordia features Baroque stucco work from the 18th century.

Nature and Landscape

Part of the municipality of Torreperogil lies within the Alto Guadalquivir natural area. Puente de la Cerrada is a reservoir belonging to the Guadalquivir, with a typical wetland landscape and a diverse waterbird population. The natural area containing the Puente de la Cerrada wetland has been designated a special protection area for birds.

Trails and Activities

The initial section of the Cañada Real El Paso has a recreational area. It includes children's play areas, kiosks, fountains, barbecue facilities, tables, benches, trees and a football pitch. A signposted route of approximately 25 kilometres through olive groves connects Torreperogil with the Renaissance towns of Úbeda and Sabiote. Along the route between Torreperogil, Úbeda and Sabiote, the journey can be divided into shorter sections for hiking or mountain biking.

Festivals, Cuisine and Crafts

San Antón is celebrated on 17 January. This festival includes bonfires, roasted chickpeas and ponche. Ponche is made from wine from Torreperogil, lemonade and sugar. The pilgrimage in honour of the Apostle Santiago is celebrated every year on 1 May. It includes a procession, the bathing of the statue of Santiago, carried on horseback, in the river, as well as horse races. Ajillo de berenjenas is a traditional dish from Torreperogil. It is prepared with aubergines from the region. During a visit to S.C.A. Nuestra Señora de la Misericordia, visitors can learn about the production facilities opened in 2005, as well as the techniques used to produce its olive oils and wines. The wines have the protected geographical indication “Vinos de la Tierra de Torreperogil”. Olive-wood carving is an important local craft in Torreperogil.
