Culture and Townscape

The Lugar de Encuentro LEO is a multidisciplinary public cultural and leisure center in Santiago de la Espada. It includes exhibition spaces, a 300-person auditorium, a tourist information office and workshops. A large square overlooking the Sierra de Segura is also part of the center. The Lugar de Encuentro LEO is open to visitors.

The Iglesia de Santiago Apóstol features Gothic and Levantine architectural elements. It was built in the 16th century.

A wooden balustrade from the 16th century stands on the Plaza de la Constitución. It belongs to a former Renaissance inn.

The Posada de la Ramona on the Plaza de la Constitución represents the local vernacular architecture. The historic centers of the main towns of Santiago-Pontones reflect an organically developed medieval urban structure.

Local Cuisine

The traditional ajoatao is prepared with potatoes and garlic. Potatoes and garlic are grown in the Vega de Santiago de la Espada.

Nature and Landscape

Near Santiago de la Espada, next to the hamlet of La Toba, lies the Nacimiento de la Toba. There, water emerges from a cave. It then flows through the hamlet to a waterfall.

The Pino Galapán is a black pine more than four centuries old. It is located about 16 kilometers from Santiago de la Espada.

Near Santiago de la Espada lies the Mirador de Zumeta, which is also known as Salto de la Novia. The viewpoint is located on the road leading north from the town. From there, there are views of the Poyos de Mesa plateau and the Sierra del Huebras. The peaks of the Sierra del Huebras reach up to 1,600 meters in this area. Among other species, griffon vultures, golden eagles and peregrine falcons can be found there.

Routes and Traditions

A visitor route from Santiago de la Espada to Juntas de Miller covers 22 kilometers one way. It follows a mountain road via the JF-7038.

During the Romería de Santa Quiteria celebrated in Santiago de la Espada, the procession travels from the Iglesia de Santiago Apóstol to La Carreña. Participants bring horses and wear Andalusian or serrano traditional dress. The celebration includes a mass in honor of the saint. The feast day is then celebrated by the river.

In a tradition in Santiago de la Espada, animals are led from the banks of the Río Zumeta, about four kilometers from the town, through the main streets to the Plaza del Ayuntamiento.

The Camino de San Juan de la Cruz connects Beas de Segura and Caravaca de la Cruz. It passes through a landscape of mountains, forests, rivers, hamlets, farmsteads and villages.
