Casabermeja: Culture, Ceramics and Hiking Trails

In Casabermeja, the Enclave Arqueológico de Peñas de Cabrera is located on Cerro de Cabrera. It includes prehistoric rock paintings in numerous rock shelters and lies in an exceptionally well-preserved landscape with predominantly native plant and animal life.

Culture and History

The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora del Socorro is protected as an Asset of Cultural Interest and is considered Casabermeja’s most important urban landmark. It was built in the first half of the 16th century and expanded in the 18th century. Its floor plan is in the shape of a Latin cross, with three naves and a transept vaulted by a dome.

The Cementerio de San Sebastián was built in the 18th century. It has been designated a National Monument since 1980 and has also held Asset of Cultural Interest status since 2006. Visits to Peñas de Cabrera are organized for groups of 10 to 50 people by prior arrangement and must be requested at least one week before the desired date.

Ceramics continue to be produced by hand in Casabermeja. The Museo Taller de Cerámica was established in 2007 and features a permanent exhibition as well as several temporary exhibitions. In March 2026, a program combined a visit to the museum with the opportunity to make your own ceramic piece at the market.

Landscape and Viewpoints

The Olivo Milenario is a monumental olive tree that was recognized as such by the University of Córdoba on April 5, 2013. It is more than 1,000 years old and grows from three trunks, each of which has a circumference of more than 7 meters.

The Parque Natural de los Montes de Málaga extends across the municipal areas of Málaga and Casabermeja and covers 4,900 hectares. Torre Zambra is a Muslim defensive tower at the top of a strategically located hill. From there, clear conditions allow panoramic views of Málaga, the Montes de Málaga, parts of Granada, El Torcal and North Africa.

The Ruta Madroñal y Cerro Mallén reaches Cerro Mallén, the highest point in the municipality of Casabermeja at 915 meters above sea level. The route offers 360-degree views across large parts of Casabermeja and Málaga Province. It passes through Bocanegra, a wooded area with native Mediterranean forest species.

Hiking and Trails

Six hiking trails have been designated in Casabermeja: Ruta de las Fuentes, Ruta de los Tajos, Ruta Campo de Cámara, Ruta Las Peñas de Cabrera, Ruta Madroñal y Cerro Mallén and Ruta Torre Zambra.

The Ruta Las Peñas de Cabrera is an easy hike covering 4.5 kilometers each way, with a walking time of 1 hour and 20 minutes each way, and passes through Mediterranean forest. In addition to the El Calvario Chapel, the Ruta de los Tajos includes an architecturally distinguished viewpoint with 360-degree views of the surrounding mountains.

The Ruta de las Fuentes leads to the Las Parras Nuevas spring. The Roman waterworks known as Castelum Aquae and the Cementerio de San Sebastián are also located there. The Ruta Torre Zambra features a designated recreational area with a children’s park, a covered barbecue area with 10 barbecue grills, drinking water, tables and benches, toilets, and a hostel with two large halls; one of them has a fireplace and a large terrace.

Festivals and Cuisine

The Fiesta de la Cabra Malagueña combines a livestock show and shepherding activities with a cheese market, local products and handicrafts, tastings, monument visits, concerts, Verdiales and a food route featuring goat and cheese products.

Local cuisine includes Chivo Lechal Malagueño, as well as other meat and dairy products from the Cabra Española de Raza Malagueña goat breed.
