Nature and Trails

The Ruta de las Fuentes is a three-kilometre circular walk through Cuevas del Becerro and has a very low level of difficulty. It includes 17 stations and 15 fountains. The route begins at El Nacimiento, a spring where the water that flows along the route emerges. The starting point, watercourse and individual stations therefore form a continuous circular walk through the village. The names of the spring and the fountains are directly associated with the course of this route.

The La Barranca–El Tejar Route is a 5.98-kilometre circular route. It begins in the centre of Cuevas del Becerro and follows rural paths into the municipality’s predominantly agricultural area. Its course includes Los Resbaladeros, which is considered a traditional recreational area. The route also leads to the old threshing floor, Era del Nacimiento, where grain was threshed. Its course thus connects the town centre with rural paths, a traditional recreational area and a historic example of grain processing.

The landscapes along this route include views of limestone formations and panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. The La Barranca–El Tejar route therefore combines its circuit through the municipality with the aforementioned terrain features and landscape views.

History and Culture

The parish church of San Antonio Abad in Cuevas del Becerro was founded in 1595. The hills overlooking the village contain the remains of fortifications; one of these 958-metre-high hills is called El Castillón. A Roman pottery kiln provides evidence of Cuevas del Becerro’s former Roman settlement. The church, fortification remains and kiln thus represent different historical traces of the village: a 16th-century parish church, structures on the overlooking hills and evidence from its Roman past.

The local festival in honour of San Antonio Abad takes place on 17 January. On 15 May, the local festival in honour of San Isidro Labrador takes place; it includes a pilgrimage in his honour. The two dates are part of local tradition, as are the names of the venerated saints and the pilgrimage associated with San Isidro Labrador.
