Villanueva de Algaidas between Convent, Rock Chapel and Hiking Route

Convent and settlement history

The Convento de Nuestra Señora de la Consolación was founded in 1566 by Don Pedro Téllez Girón, the first Duke of Osuna. It was the origin of the first settlement. Of the convent ruins, the church remains; its roof is missing. Here, a specific founding date is combined with a visible architectural testament and the early history of the place.

A historic route to La Atalaya

The Convento de Nuestra Señora de la Consolación is located next to La Atalaya and is connected to Villanueva de Algaidas by a footpath. This path forms part of the Mozarabic Route of the Camino de Santiago. This gives the historic site a clear connection to a route if you would like to combine cultural discoveries with active exploration.

GR 249 and the Genil Valley

The GR 249 Gran Senda de Málaga includes Stage 15, which is 9.92 km long and runs from Villanueva de Algaidas to Cuevas Bajas. A section of this stage runs along unpaved paths and offers a viewpoint over the Genil Valley. The exact route length helps you assess this hiking option and compare it with other plans for a day of discovery.

Gorge and views of the cultural landscape

The gorge carved into the rock on which Villanueva de Algaidas stands preserves a remnant of the original vegetation because of its shady conditions. The Mirador de la Atalaya is located in the hamlet of La Atalaya. From there, you can look out over the Convento de Nuestra Señora de la Consolación and the adjacent Mozarabic rock chapel. The Iglesia Rupestre is a small hermitage carved into sandstone, with three rooms and a smaller cave accessible from the outside.

The Puente del Arroyo del Bebedero

The Puente del Arroyo del Bebedero is a late medieval bridge in the municipality of Villanueva de Algaidas. It connected the settlements of La Rincona and La Atalaya. Its construction features a central semicircular arch and two smaller side arches that serve to drain floodwater. This structure therefore shows not only a historic connection between two settlements, but also a clearly recognizable architectural solution.

Festivals and local specialities

The Fiesta Gastronómica y Coplera “Relleno y Carnaval” normally takes place two weeks before Carnival. On this occasion, Relleno and Borrachuelos are sampled. The Feria y Fiestas de Agosto takes place on the first weekend of August and normally includes the Noche Flamenca and the Feria del Caballo. The different dates and activities provide specific guidance if you would like to plan your stay around a cultural event.
