Gaucín – Culture, Art and Hiking Routes

The former Carmelite monastery in Gaucín is a building representative of the town. Today, the former monastery is used as a cultural centre. The Castillo del Águila has Roman origins. During the Andalusian period, the complex was reinforced by Muslims. The surviving parts include the wall and the keep. The cisterns and an escape tunnel have also been preserved. The Castillo del Águila is located at the highest point of Gaucín. From there, it overlooks the Genal Valley, the Campo de Gibraltar and North Africa. The Iglesia de San Sebastián is integrated into Gaucín’s urban structure. It was built at the beginning of the 16th century. The Fuente de los Seis Caños is located at a small widening of the village square. It was built from sandstone in 1628. The cultural landscape of Gaucín is listed in the Register of Andalusian Cultural Landscapes.

Art and Events

The Centro Cultural «El Convento» organises an events programme throughout the year. This includes concerts, exhibitions, conferences and workshops. Every year, Art Gaucín opens the studios of local artists to visitors. The opening takes place over two weekends in May. The Museo Etnográfico displays objects. Tools are also among its exhibits. Both illustrate traditional rural life in Andalusia. The Espacio Sánchez Zabaleta provides a permanent exhibition space in Gaucín. This space is dedicated to the artist’s works. Shapó Olé is a contemporary art gallery in the centre of Gaucín. It brings together painting, photography, sculpture and engraving.

The various exhibition venues therefore focus on both rural everyday life and the works of individual artists and contemporary art. The events programme complements these permanent venues with concerts, exhibitions, conferences and workshops that change over time.
