Archidona – Nature, History and Culture
Nature, Hiking and Views
The Parque Periurbano Sierra de Gracia offers hiking as its main recreational activity and also provides panoramic views of Archidona. The Hoz del Arroyo Marín is located in the town of Archidona and is a nature reserve or natural sanctuary. This area includes an aquatic ecosystem with high biodiversity that is particularly relevant for waterbirds.
The description of the natural surroundings thus combines a park with a protected area within the town. The aquatic ecosystem is characterized by its high biodiversity and particular relevance for waterbirds. Both references to nature remain linked to specifically named places and features, complementing Archidona’s historical themes with an independent landscape aspect.
History and Architecture
The Plaza Ochavada was built in 1786 and is considered an outstanding example of 18th-century Andalusian urban planning. Its historical and architectural value led to its recognition in 2007 as the “First Wonder of the Province of Málaga.”
The walled district of Archidona was a Muslim city and preserves evidence of eight centuries of history. This historic area contains the former mosque, which is now the Ermita de la Virgen de Gracia. A minaret was converted into a bell tower; the minaret is considered unique in Málaga.
Museum, Memory and Radio
Since 2004, the Museo Municipal de Archidona has been housed in the former Casa del Pósito or Cilla. The building’s former function therefore remains part of its history, while the museum is now divided into three halls. The first hall is dedicated to the history of Archidona from prehistoric times onward. The second is designed as a multifunctional hall for exhibitions and official events. The third hall is dedicated to the collective memory of cultural and religious traditions.
The new Salón de la Radio in Archidona houses one of the most significant radio collections in Europe. The radio collection complements the museum’s historical content with a separate area dedicated to the medium of radio.
Traditions
Archidona’s Semana Santa is recognized as a Festival of National Tourist Interest and has a long tradition. One of its special features is La Zumba, a unique instrument that marks Christ’s falls. The religious celebration is thus defined both by its official recognition and by this special instrument.
