Igualeja: Nature, Hiking and Culture

The Nacimiento del Río Genal Natural Monument is located in Igualeja in the Province of Málaga and is part of the Valle del Río Genal ZEC.

Hiking and Trails

The PR-A-222 connects Cartajima and Igualeja through dense chestnut forests and the Río Nacimiento valley. On this route, you cross the Río Nacimiento at a ford. The PR-A-222 then climbs to the ridge of Igualeja. The trail enters Igualeja via Calle Hiladero. The ford, ascent and route along Calle Hiladero mark the individual sections between the landscape and the town. The sequence of the trail therefore extends from the chestnut forest and valley, across the river crossing and ridge, to the entrance to the town.

Igualeja's trail network comprises a total of three hiking routes. These routes pass through natural and cultural landscapes. If you are travelling by bicycle, the SL-A 173 hiking trail can be cycled.

Via Ferrata

The Igualeja Via Ferrata is located in the Valle del Genal in the immediate vicinity of the source of the Río Genal. Its sections run predominantly horizontally. The Via Ferrata also includes several athletic passages. The horizontal orientation therefore characterises most of the facility, while the athletic passages complement individual sections.

Culture and Townscape

The Iglesia de Santa Rosa de Lima is a Mudéjar church. It was built in 1505 on the orders of the Archbishop of Seville, Diego de Deza, on the site of a former mosque. The minaret of the former mosque has been preserved as a tower. The building's history thus connects the present-day church with the former religious structure and the minaret preserved as a tower.

The Ermita del Divino Pastor is an 18th-century chapel with a trapezoidal floor plan in the Andalusian Baroque style. El Albaicín is the old quarter of Igualeja. It consists of winding streets and whitewashed houses. The stone walls of these houses rest on the rock.

Festivals and Chestnuts

Igualeja's patron saint festivals take place from 29 August to 2 September. They are celebrated in honour of San Gregorio Magno and Santa Rosa de Lima.

The pasos of Holy Week in Igualeja are considered famous. In them, more than 60 people portray scenes from the Passion with elaborate costumes and equipment. In Igualeja, a portrayal of the Passion of Jesus Christ has been performed every Holy Saturday since the beginning of the 21st century. The Holy Week portrayal is therefore characterised both by the participation of more than 60 people and by the Holy Saturday specified each year.

The chestnut harvest in Igualeja begins at the end of September and the beginning of October. The most important variety is the pilonga chestnut. Igualeja also celebrates the so-called “Toro de Fuego” festival.
