Álora – Castle, Churches and Trails in the Guadalhorce Valley
History and Architecture
The Arab Castle of Álora stands on Cerro de las Torres, offering views across the Valle del Guadalhorce. The castle was built by the Moors in the Middle Ages and has Phoenician and Roman origins. Its layout comprises two separate fortified areas; the upper area contains six square towers. A horseshoe arch leads into the walled area of the Arab Castle.
The Rafael Lería Municipal Museum presents the history and archaeological heritage of Álora, from its first inhabitants to the present day. The Iglesia Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación is a large Baroque church with three naves and Tuscan columns. Its features include a Mudejar-style wooden ceiling and 18th-century frescoes depicting the twelve apostles.
Places of Worship
Between the 16th and 18th centuries, the Convento Santuario de Flores developed from a hermitage into a Franciscan convent. The complex includes a Camarín decorated with stucco work. Since 1502, the Convento Santuario de Flores has been a place of veneration for the Virgen de Flores.
Since the 16th century, the Ermita de Santa Brígida has served as a place of veneration for the Virgen de la Cabeza and preserves a wall fresco. The Ermita del Calvario houses a sculpture of Nuestro Señor del Huerto created by Luis Álvarez Duarte.
Landscape and Trails
The Mirador 360º viewpoint is located along the path that runs around Cerro de las Torres from the castle to Plaza de la Despedía. From there, a dynamic 360-degree view extends across the valley.
The route over Monte Hacho is a circular trail of approximately 14 kilometres that starts and ends in the centre of Álora and takes around four hours. It passes through pine forests as well as varied geological and biological landscapes. Along the way, visitors may spot, among other species, griffon vultures and ibex.
The southern entrance to the Caminito del Rey is located near Álora, at El Chorro railway station. Shuttle buses connect it in both directions with the northern entrance near the Guadalhorce Reservoir in the Ardales area.
The official “Templos de leyenda” tour leads through Álora to churches, hermitages and sanctuaries. It brings the development of the buildings and the town’s multicultural past to life.
