Nature and Trails

Monda is part of the Sierra de las Nieves Natural Park; the GR 243-1 Monda–Juanar–Ojén connects Monda and Ojén via the Juanar area in the Sierra de las Nieves Natural Park. The GR 243-1 passes through pine forests, Mediterranean scrubland, typical mountain crops and chestnut groves.

The PR-A 275/276 Monda–Fuente Morales–Cerro Gordo is an 8.5-kilometre circular route with an estimated duration of 3 hours and 50 minutes and a low difficulty level. The PR-A 277 Monda–Camino Alto is a family-friendly route with a low difficulty level and information panels about the area's flora, fauna and traditional activities. The PR-A 277 climbs through a pine forest to Camino Alto, which is classified as a Vía Pecuaria.

Cerro Gordo is a limestone massif with abundant dolomite. The Sierra de Alpujata has a reddish colour due to its peridotitic rocks. The Alpujata stream irrigated terraced gardens through an Arab system of acequias. The Fuente de los Morales is surrounded by huertas in the Los Morales area.

History and Culture

The northern tower of the Castillo de Monda is topped by a small viewing platform and preserves its original plaster with sgraffito decoration known as vitola. El Calvario is an 18th-century religious structure and the final station of the Way of the Cross during Semana Santa in Monda. The parish church in Monda was built in 1505 and later extended with two side aisles.

The Casa Museo Mari Gloria is an ethnographic museum in one of Monda's oldest houses. In the Arroyo de la Teja area, there is an approximately 500-metre-long section of a Roman road. In the Arroyo Casarín area, there are two well-preserved Arab mills.

Places described as must-see sights in Monda include the Fuente-lavadero de La Jaula, the Casa Museo Mari Gloria and El Calvario.

A viewing platform offers panoramic views of Monda in the foreground and the Sierra de las Nieves in the background. This viewing platform can be reached via Calle Consejo, the former bypass, or via Calle Peragüera.

Festivals and Local Cuisine

On 24 and 25 July, Monda hosted the 29th edition of the Festival Flamenco Villa de Monda. The Día de la Sopa Mondeña takes place in spring in Monda and is recognised as a Fiesta de Singularidad Turística Provincial; the edition was numbered XXVIII. During the Día de la Sopa Mondeña, the soup is prepared in a single-piece Dornillo made of holm oak wood.

The 17th Día del Carbonero combined music, dance, gastronomy and local memory.
