Ojén between Sierra Blanca and cultural history

Nature

Sierra Blanca lies between the municipal areas of Istán, Ojén and Marbella and, as a Site of Community Importance (SCI) ES6170011, forms part of the Natura 2000 network. Sierra Blanca is home to, among other species, Iberian ibex, roe deer and genets.

The Mirador El Corzo viewpoint offers views of Ojén and the coast from Mijas to Fuengirola from Cerro del Pechón at an altitude of 881 metres. The Mirador El Macho Montés viewpoint is the endpoint of the marked El Juanar–Puerto Marbella hiking trail in the Sierra Blanca SAC and is also known as Mirador de Puerto Rico or Mirador de Marbella. East of Ojén's town centre lies the Mirador del Chifle viewpoint, offering views across the Río Real valley.

The upper caves offer views of Ojén's townscape and the Mediterranean.

Hiking and recreation

The long-distance PR-A 167 hiking trail leads through the Camino del Cerezal along a densely vegetated gorge to Ojén. At the final junction of the PR-A 167, both possible routes lead to Ojén.

The Llanos de Purla recreation area has a paved car park, fifteen tables, toilets and picnic facilities with barbecues.

Culture and history

Ojén's historic streets reflect the town's Islamic origins and include stepped lanes. The church on Plaza de Andalucía, at the corner of Paseo de Ojén, was built in 1505.

The church has a rectangular floor plan, a single-nave interior and a Mudéjar roof structure with interlaced bandwork. It is believed to have been founded as an Arab mosque during the early medieval beginnings of the settlement of Ojén.

The Museo del Aguardiente de Ojén presents the history and legend of the liqueur with information panels, labels, posters and old vessels. The lower caves of Ojén have been restored for cultural use.

The Museo del Molino de Aceite shows how olive oil was extracted in the past. The Museo del Molino de Aceite in Ojén was recently restored.

The Eras del Calvario form part of Ojén's ethnographic heritage. They were built before the 16th century and are protected because of their historical and cultural significance.

The Way of the Cross in Ojén is a permanent and permanently accessible cultural route. Along the climb to El Calvario, fourteen polychrome tile altarpieces depict the Passion of Christ.

An archaeological site of the third degree has been designated for Ojén; there is no legally binding designation for its protection.

Festivals

The Ojeando Festival is a two-day music event held on the second weekend of July, featuring more than twenty performances. The Castillo del Cante Flamenco Festival in Ojén reached its 51st edition in 2026.
