Pujerra: Chestnut Forests, Culture and Trails

Pujerra lies directly beside a river. Dense chestnut groves surround the town. In the Alto Genal, Pujerra is one of the places where the predominant agrosilvopastoral landscape is reflected in extensive forests dedicated to chestnut cultivation.

Culture and Townscape

The Casa Museo de la Castaña opened in 2012. The chestnut is its central theme. Through this subject, the museum conveys historical and cultural aspects of Pujerra and its surroundings. The exhibition thus establishes a connection with the local landscape and the history of the town.

The Museo de la Castaña is located in the centre of Pujerra, in a three-storey building. The Casa Museo de la Castaña is housed in a traditional building from the region. This building has stone walls and a wooden structure. The town centre is therefore home to a museum whose subject is directly connected to the chestnut cultivation that shapes the area.

Pujerra's narrow, winding network of streets reflects the town's Andalusian origins. The Mirador del Castañar is an attraction in Pujerra.

Pujerra is home to a monument to King Wamba. An oral legend handed down in Pujerra places his meeting with the royal delegation near the Molino de Capilla.

History

The Iglesia del Espíritu Santo was built at the beginning of the 16th century. Its nave is single-aisled and rectangular. The wooden roof structure is designed in the Mudéjar style.

The church houses a depiction of Saint Anthony of Padua. This depiction dates from the 18th century. Saint Anthony of Padua is the patron saint of Pujerra.

Festivals

Pujerra continues the revived tradition of the Cruces de Mayo. The cross at the Mirador de la Cruz is decorated every year with flowers and handmade ornamental elements.

La Cruz is a local recreational area for the residents of Pujerra. The Día de la Cruz is celebrated there.

The Fiesta de la Castaña takes place after the chestnut harvest has been completed. It coincides with the feast day of the town's patron saint, the Virgen de Fátima.

At the Fiesta de la Castaña, visitors can sample more than 50 dishes prepared with chestnuts. At this festival, the chestnut appears both in the annual harvest cycle and in the local cuisine.

Trails

The approved hiking trail designated PR-A 223 leads from Pujerra to the Puerto del Madroño. The PR-A 225 hiking trail leads from Júzcar to Pujerra. It leads to an old washhouse in the area known as La Cruz. The Puerto del Madroño is the destination of the PR-A 223. On the PR-A 225, the old washhouse is located in the La Cruz area.

The official Serranía de Ronda–Valle del Genal motorcycle tour runs via the MA-7300 to Pujerra.
