Mijas: Historic Centre and Sierra de Mijas
The former settlement centre of Mijas was located where the Jardines de La Muralla are today; historical documents from 1492 mention a fortress with a tower and a mosque at that location.

History
The historic centre of Mijas was declared a Historic-Artistic Ensemble in 1969. It preserves a layout of Arab origin, with whitewashed streets offering views of the Mediterranean. The Mijas bullring was built in 1900 at the request of a group of residents and constructed into the rock. Its oval shape is considered one of the few of its kind in Spain.
Culture, Collections and Art
The Casa Museo opened in June 1995 in the building of Mijas's former town hall, illustrating the Mijas of the past with agricultural and fishing equipment, olive presses, a wine cellar, a typical Mijas kitchen and local handicrafts.
The collection of the Carromato de Mijas was presented as early as 1972, when the exhibition venue opened, with around 360 miniatures. Many of these miniatures are displayed there using magnifying glasses and optical magnification systems.
The permanent exhibition of the CAC Mijas was intended to bring together primarily around 70 works by Pablo Ruiz Picasso and Salvador DalÃ. The CAC Mijas regularly plans art workshops for children as well as discussion and lecture series on art and culture.
Nature
The Sierra de Mijas is a limestone mountain range running parallel to the coast and forms a species-rich natural balcony overlooking the Mediterranean. Around Pico Mijas, visitors can observe, among others, kestrels, golden eagles and short-toed snake eagles. The Ruta Botánica covers an area of 12,875 square metres and contains various native plant species from the province of Málaga, as well as a total of 140 species from all continents.
Trails and Discoveries
Along the network of self-guided hiking trails, information panels provide information on nature, culture and ethnology. On these trails, the panels accompany visitors' exploration with information from all three areas. On the Ruta de los Artesanos in Mijas, visitors can discover workshops where artisans demonstrate how unique objects are made. The local festivals of Mijas take place in the first half of September, particularly on 8 September, in honour of the patron saint Virgen de la Peña.
The Ruta Selfie de Mijas includes 15 special locations throughout the municipality, marked with small yellow plaques; three additional night-time spots are highlighted for their nocturnal illumination and exceptional beauty. The plaques identify the selected locations throughout the municipality, while the three additional spots are highlighted by their night-time illumination.
