El Faro – Beach, History and Nature

Coast and Trails

A clear starting point for days by the sea is Playa El Faro – Punta de Calaburras beach: it is easy to reach on foot, by car, and by bus. For an active route along the coast, the Senda Litoral is a walking and cycling path along the beaches of the Costa del Sol; one section extends from the el Faro restaurant to Fuengirola.

Nature

Punta de Calaburra is a particularly significant location for observing seabirds, especially during migration and wintering. Punta de Calaburra is also an interesting place for observing marine mammals.

The ZEC area extends between Calahonda and Faro de Calaburras. A ZEC area is a protection category of the European Union within the Natura 2000 network.

The nature observations mentioned therefore include seabirds and marine mammals, while the ZEC area is additionally defined by its European protection category within the Natura 2000 network.

Culture and History

Construction of the Torre de Calaburras was financed in 1574 and completed the following year. Planning for the Faro de Calaburras began in 1861; commissioning was scheduled for August 1863.

The tower of the Faro de Calaburras that remains today was completed in 1928 and is 23 metres high. Castillo Sohail, a castle, is also located in the immediate vicinity of El Faro.

The cultural and historical sites therefore focus on the Torre de Calaburras, the Faro de Calaburras, and Castillo Sohail, each with its own distinct name and classification.
