La Cala de Mijas: Coast, Markets and Paths by the Sea

Playa La Cala is easy to access on foot, by car and by bus. At Playa de La Cala–Torreón beach, supervised bathing is supported by a 156 m² shaded shelter staffed by three specialised lifeguards. Sun loungers, a pair of crutches, a lifting device and three amphibious chairs are also available. Two of these amphibious chairs are intended for adults and one for children. These specific facilities can provide important guidance, particularly when planning beach days for people with different needs.

The Senda Litoral is a walking and cycling path near La Cala. It passes Mediterranean dunes and coastal sandy areas where protected plant and animal species are found. It also leads to coastal areas along the Mijas coastline intended for leisure activities and water sports. In this way, the path brings together several facets of the coast: peaceful landscape experiences, exercise on foot or by bicycle, and areas designated for activities on the water.

History and Cultural Impressions

The Torre de la Batería de Cala del Moral was built in 1773 and is listed as a “Bien de Interés Cultural” (B.I.C.). Mijas Town Hall restored the tower and adapted it for museum use. The Torreón de La Cala Interpretation Centre is temporarily closed; this status is therefore one of the relevant conditions to consider when planning your cultural activities.

Markets with a Regional Rhythm

A market for organic produce takes place on the Bulevar de La Cala de Mijas on the second and last Sunday of every month. Another regular event is the street market in La Cala de Mijas: it takes place on Wednesday mornings at the Recinto Ferial, approximately from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Such market dates give your stay a connection to everyday local life and, alongside the beach and coastal path, showcase the character of the local marketplace.

Festivals Throughout the Year

The programme of the Feria de La Cala de Mijas includes concerts, a daytime fair and children's activities. The local festivities in La Cala take place at the end of July. On 16 July, La Cala already celebrates Día del Carmen with a procession.
