Cajiz: Church, Festivals and Nature

The Iglesia Parroquial de San José in Cajiz has been documented in ecclesiastical records since 1505. The present-day building dates from the 18th century. During a restoration in 1945, the side aisles were removed. This resulted in the current form, with a Latin-cross floor plan. The church thus reveals several construction phases: the early mention in ecclesiastical records, the 18th-century building and the change brought about by the restoration in the 20th century, which produced its present appearance.

Culture and History

El Paso de Cajiz has its roots in the 16th and 17th centuries. The Provincial Council of Málaga recognised El Paso de Cajiz as a Fiesta de Singularidad Turística. El Paso de Cajiz is described as featuring 36 biblical scenes with more than 230 local performers and amateur actors.

Festivals and Traditions

The traditional Feria de Cajiz, held in honour of Saint Joseph, includes musical, liturgical and traditional activities in its programme. It is celebrated from 19 to 22 March. The festival thus combines religious occasions with music and established traditions. The Noche de Blues de Cajiz is considered a summer tradition and usually takes place at the end of August or the beginning of September. Its date therefore falls at the transition from August to September and adds another musical focus to the festival calendar.

The two events represent different forms of local cultural life: the Feria is dedicated to Saint Joseph and includes liturgical and traditional programme items, while the Noche de Blues is classified as a summer tradition.

Nature

The recreational area of Cajiz is situated amid nature near the settlement. Access to the site is fully paved. The recreational area includes three picnic tables and six mulberry trees that provide shade. The facilities are therefore clearly defined: three tables serve as permanent elements of the site, while the six mulberry trees create shaded areas. The recreational area combines proximity to the settlement with a location in Cajiz’s natural surroundings.

Activities

The biosaludable park in Cajiz has exercise equipment for skating, cycling, cross-country skiing and rowing. The equipment thus draws on forms of movement from different areas. The park has explanatory signs, so that the respective exercise equipment is accompanied by corresponding information. The sports area has certification in accordance with applicable standards.

At the Iglesia Parroquial de San José, the side aisles are not part of the present-day structure as a result of the 1945 restoration; the Latin-cross floor plan belongs to the form created during that restoration. The recreational area has three picnic tables, while six mulberry trees provide shade. In the biosaludable park, the equipment relates to the four forms of movement mentioned.
