Torrox: Roman History, Beaches and Hiking Trails

At the Faro de Torrox lies an archaeological site identified with the Roman Mansio Caviclum on the coastal road of the Itinerarium Antonini. The Conjunto del Faro de Torrox includes a seaside villa, a fish-salting factory later reused as a necropolis, baths and a pottery complex for the production of amphorae. The Faro de Torrox was built in 1864 and is open to the public.

Culture and history

In the historic town centre, Plaza de la Constitución forms the centre of Torrox; various routes and trail sections are usually planned from here. The parish church of Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación dates from the 17th century: at the beginning of the 17th century, it was built over the former Aljama mosque and rebuilt in 1889.

Outside Torrox, the Minims of Saint Francis of Paola first founded the hermitage and subsequently the Nuestra Señora de las Nieves monastery in the 16th century. The monastery is protected as a monument under the Bien de Interés Cultural protection category, while its complex preserves a church and a cloister with Mudéjar and Baroque elements.

The Torre de Calaceite dates from the 15th century and was part of a coastal surveillance system intended to warn of enemy ships. The Torre Güi is a 9-metre-high masonry tower with a circular ground plan and a truncated-conical structure.

Beach and trails

Playa Ferrara in Torrox has sports courts, water sports equipment rentals and a seafront promenade. The Senda Litoral – GR92 E12 is a long-distance hiking trail that passes through Torrox and a total of 14 municipalities on the Costa del Sol. Its route includes seafront promenades, cycle paths, trails and wooden walkways.

Dishes and wines

Typical dishes from Torrox include Migas torroxeñas made from durum wheat semolina. They are served with sardines, cod, clams, olives and Ensaladilla arriera. The regional wines of Torrox are traditionally made from Muscat grapes; sweet, semi-dry, dry and Aguapié wines are represented. The Día de las Migas event has been declared of national tourist interest in Andalusia.
