Yunquera: Hiking Trails, Festivals and Cultural Heritage

The hiking trail named Yunquera–Los Sauces begins in Yunquera and leads through dense forests, grain fields and mountain olive groves.

Its route also includes impressive steep slopes and gorges, as well as winding streams.

The Puerto Saucillo–Puerto Bellina circular hiking trail begins at Puerto Saucillo, ends at the same starting point and is accessible from Yunquera.

This trail offers sightings of birds of prey, numerous Spanish firs and views of the Sierra landscape.

The landscape elements mentioned therefore range from agricultural areas and mountain olive groves to forests, gorges and streams. At Puerto Saucillo–Puerto Bellina, the Spanish firs, bird-of-prey sightings and views of the Sierra add further characteristic trail features.

The Puerto Saucillo–Torrecilla linear route is 9.4 kilometres long, has a high level of difficulty and an estimated walking time of around four hours.

It is accessible from Yunquera.

The trail passes through karst limestone terrain with Spanish fir and mountain cork oak forests.

It also features high-mountain meadows and exceptional viewpoints.

The El Caucón, also known as Luis Ceballos, viewpoint offers a close-up view of a Spanish fir forest and a sweeping panorama towards the Guadalhorce Valley.

From Yunquera, visitors can hike two sections of the GR-243 Sierra de las Nieves long-distance trail: Yunquera–Tolox and Yunquera–Los Sauces–El Burgo.

Culture, History and Festivals

The Romería de Porticate is a pilgrimage held annually on 15 August in honour of the Virgen de Porticate.

The Ermita de Porticate is located about five kilometres from the town centre.

It dates from the 18th century, was remodelled in 1929 and is a pilgrimage site for the residents of Yunquera.

The Torre Vigía is currently open to visitors.

Events held there include full-moon nights, astronomy courses and meteor-shower nights.

Holy Week in Yunquera begins on Palm Sunday with a staged depiction of the entry into Jerusalem performed by local children.

On one Thursday, squares and streets in Yunquera are decorated with altars.

These altars bear an image of the Lord and are decorated with cloths, palm arches and aromatic plants.

The Casa-Museo Francisco Sola is a manor house belonging to the Sola Portocarrero family, with an extensive cultural heritage.

Today, the house also accommodates Yunquera’s visitor information centre.

Historical buildings, religious events and publicly decorated squares therefore coexist in Yunquera. The customs mentioned range from the pilgrimage to the Virgen de Porticate and the Palm Sunday performance to the decoration of the altars with palm arches and aromatic plants.

Wine and Local Traditions

Yunquera preserves the tradition of producing the so-called “vino mosto”.

A programme is planned for the 2026 Feria del Vino y la Castaña.

It includes free tastings, an arts and crafts and agricultural food market, as well as tourist routes.

This is complemented by the traditional “pisá” of the grapes.

The planned festival programme thus combines tastings, market activities, tourist routes and the traditional processing of grapes with Yunquera’s wine and chestnut traditions.
