Málaga: Alcazaba, Theater and City Beach
Culture and History
The Alcazaba is a palace fortress of the city's Muslim rulers and was built largely in the 11th century. The fortress houses a permanent exhibition on ceramics from the Muslim era, with a strong educational focus. It includes restored finds from the Alcazaba as well as further finds from urban excavations. Thus, in addition to its architectural history, the Alcazaba also features ceramic finds discovered at various locations in Málaga.
The Castillo de Gibralfaro was built in the 14th century. It served to accommodate troops and protect the Alcazaba. Málaga's Roman Theater was built during the reign of Augustus in the 1st century AD. A visitor center was established there in 2007 following excavation and restoration work. The military function of the Castillo de Gibralfaro and its connection to the Alcazaba form a distinct historical context within the city.
The Palacio de Buenavista is an example of 16th-century Andalusian architecture. Renaissance and Mudéjar elements are combined in it. Its basement contains Phoenician and Roman remains. It also contains rooms from the former Renaissance palace. These areas are presented to visitors as fragments of Málaga's history. The same building therefore brings together architectural elements and traces from the Phoenician, Roman and earlier Renaissance periods.
Nature
The JardÃn Botánico-Histórico La Concepción was created in 1855. It is a protected cultural asset classified as a Bien de Interés Cultural. Its collection includes more than 50,000 plants. The garden also contains 3,000 tropical, subtropical, native, endemic and agricultural species, varieties and cultivars. The protection status applies to the historic botanical garden as a cultural asset with this extensive plant diversity.
The JardÃn Botánico-Histórico La Concepción can be visited independently. A guided tour is also available. Both forms of visiting are expressly provided for the garden.
Coast and Cuisine
La Malagueta is a city beach near Málaga's historic center. The beach is approximately 1.2 kilometers long. Its waters are calm, and it has been awarded Blue Flag status. The promenade of Playa de La Malagueta offers a diverse range of dining options as well as opportunities for water sports and other sporting activities. The beach length remains an approximate figure of about 1.2 kilometers.
The Mercado de Atarazanas was classified in 1979 as a Bien de Interés Cultural, meaning a protected cultural asset of cultural interest. It is located on the site of former Nasrid shipyards from the 14th century and preserves their monumental marble gate. At the Mercado de Atarazanas, visitors can buy fresh produce or eat pescaÃto tapas. The site's former use as Nasrid shipyards is part of the market's historical context; the marble gate has been preserved from that period.
