Nature and Trails

The Sierra de Tolox viewpoint offers you a 360-degree panoramic view of the surrounding area. The panorama stretches from the main peaks of the Sierra de las Nieves mountain range to the Guadalhorce Valley. This provides views both of the high elevations of the mountain range and of the lower-lying valley.

Two thirds of Tolox's municipal area lie within Sierra de las Nieves National Park. La Torrecilla, the highest peak in western Andalusia, is also located within the municipality. The national park therefore occupies a large part of the municipal area, while La Torrecilla is identified as a particularly high point within Tolox.

One of the national park's most important Spanish fir forests lies on the slopes of Cerro Corona. This Spanish fir forest is accessible from Cañada de las Carnicerías. The forest and the starting point are thereby clearly located by their respective proper names.

The Botánico de las Peridotitas is a 717-metre circular trail. It has little incline and is suitable for families. The route combines a clearly stated length with a manageable elevation profile and, as a circular trail, returns to its starting point.

If you are looking for a classic route with a named destination, the SL-A 238 Virgen de las Nieves trail leads from Tolox to the recreation area at the Ermita de la Virgen de las Nieves. The recreation area is located in a pine forest equipped with benches, tables and fountains. At Charco de la Virgen, a waterfall plunges into a pool. In summer, this pool is frequented by canyoning enthusiasts and swimmers.

History and Spa

The Balneario de Tolox opened in 1869. It specialises exclusively in respiratory conditions. Its water releases a gas that is used for inhalation. The opening year, specialisation and use of the water are among the spa's defining details.

The Parroquia de San Miguel Arcángel was built in 1505 in the Gothic-Mudéjar style. The church building is another precisely dated element preserved in the history of the town.

Culture and Festivals

Art Tolox is a free open-air museum in Tolox. The works were donated to the municipality. The museum is open 365 days a year. Public art is therefore as much a part of the townscape as its stated year-round opening hours.

Every year on 16 August, Tolox's Cohetá takes place in honour of the patron saint San Roque. The Cohetá includes a procession accompanied by thousands of rockets. The fixed August date, religious occasion and rocket accompaniment are all components of the same festival.

The Festival Folclórico Villa de Tolox has taken place every year since 1993 in the first half of July at Plaza Alta. At the Cata de Mosto de Tolox, local must producers select their best musts. These musts compete to be chosen as the best must of the harvest.
