Cañete la Real: Fortress, Routes and Landscape

Cañete la Real combines agriculturally valuable plains with mountain areas. The Padrastro is a defining feature, a distinctive elevation in the area reaching a maximum height of 998 metres.

Culture

The Castillo de Hisn Qannit, also known as Castillo de Cañete la Real, is a medieval Muslim fortress. The fortress comprises three functionally distinct areas: an entrance area; a central area used primarily for living quarters and for storing grain and water; and a lordly area with the keep. Inside the medieval complex, the keep of Castillo de Cañete la Real houses the “Los Vigías del Territorio” Interpretation Centre. The “Los Vigías del Territorio” Interpretation Centre provides information about the origins of Cañete la Real, the Roman town of Sabora, Castillo de Cañete la Real and the fortresses of the Guadalteba region.

The Iglesia de San Sebastián is regarded as an example of Cañete la Real’s historical flourishing and of characteristic forms of the Sevillian school. It houses further paintings of great religious and cultural value. The Convento de San Francisco, also known locally as “La Cartuja”, was founded in 1624 at the request of the municipality.

The historical heritage is thus spread across different forms of religious and military architecture. In addition to the fortress with its clearly structured areas, the church featuring forms of the Sevillian school and the convent founded in 1624 are among the listed buildings of Cañete la Real. The Interpretation Centre expands the history of the town to include Sabora and the fortresses of the Guadalteba region.

Landscape and Trails

The Ruta por la Sierra de las Carboneras is a circular trail that begins outside Cañete la Real in a northwesterly direction. The route is eight kilometres long and takes approximately three and a half hours. It can be completed on foot, on horseback or by bicycle and is considered suitable for everyone, with no difficulty.

The Cueva del Santón is carved into marble-grained sandstone; its shape is the result of water erosion. The Ruta Cuevas del Santón y Hoyo Cruz is 1.074 kilometres long and takes approximately one hour. It can be completed on foot, on horseback or by bicycle and has only a very low level of difficulty.

Activities

Visitors to Cañete la Real also take part in climbing, paragliding, cycling and hiking.

Festivals and Orientation

The festival of Our Lady of Caños Santos takes place every year on the third weekend of September. The celebrations begin nine days earlier with the Rosary of the Dawn through the streets of the town and the novena. On Sunday, they conclude with an offering and a procession.
