Totalán: Towers, Landscapes and Trails in Andalusia

The Torre Salazar in Totalán is registered as a B.I.C. monument of immovable cultural heritage in Andalusia’s heritage catalogue; the registration dates from 25 June 1985.

Culture

The Torre del Violín, also known as the Mirador El Zagal, is described in Totalán as having historical and cultural significance. It was built in 2010 and commemorates a battle between Arabs and Christians, symbolised by a violin at its top.

Totalán’s entrance square was named after Antonio Molina. A bust was erected there in his honour in 2003. A ceramic commemorative plaque was installed there in his honour in 2006. Antonio Molina spent a large part of his childhood and youth with his family in Totalán.

Craftspeople in Totalán continue to work with willow branches and reeds. They keep these traditional crafts alive. Totalán’s old washhouse retains its original structure of stones and water channels through which water flows.

Landscape and Nature

The area of Totalán stretches along the basin of a stream that bears the name Totalán. Totalán’s terrain is extremely rugged. The hills, criss-crossed by erosion gullies, are predominantly covered with olive trees, almond trees and natural vegetation.

The municipality of Totalán lies on the edge of Los Montes Nature Park. The area around Totalán features typical Mediterranean scrubland. Thyme and cantueso are part of this Mediterranean scrub vegetation. From the Mirador del Algarrobo, panoramic views extend across Totalán and the surrounding valleys and mountains.

Trails and Squares

The Ruta Totalín is a freely accessible open-air interpretation centre in Totalán. It introduces visitors to the town’s history and landscapes. It is accompanied by the Totalín chameleon.

The SL-A 68 Moclinejo–Totalán hiking trail is 8.4 kilometres long. It connects Moclinejo and Totalán, is dated 2010 and is associated with the Diputación de Málaga – Turismo.

Next to the Plaza y busto a Antonio Molina there is a waterfall whose water cascades over rocks. A garden with native plants is also located next to the Plaza y busto a Antonio Molina. There are also green spaces and benches next to the square. Facilities for children are available there as well.

Festivals and Regional Context

Every November, Totalán hosts Día de la Chanfaina, the festival of the chanfaina typical of Totalán. At Día de la Chanfaina, visitors are served chanfaina. The dish is accompanied by sweet wine from the region.

Totalán is part of the Ruta de la Pasa. The Ruta de la Pasa is one of five routes in the Axarquía.
