Atajate between the Mosto Festival and Mountain Trails

Atajate: Wine Tradition in the Serranía de Ronda

Atajate is located in the Serranía de Ronda and expresses its local character through both mosto and wine and its mountain landscape and history. The Fiesta del Mosto is celebrated annually on the last Saturday in November. During the festival, mosto made from different grape varieties is distributed free of charge to locals and visitors. At the Museo Abierto al Vino, texts, illustrations and tools explain the production process of the wine that is important to the town.

The town's history includes several buildings with clearly defined historical references. The Iglesia de San José, also called Iglesia de San Roque, is a Baroque church from the 18th century and was remodelled in the 19th century. The Cruz de Piedra is one of the oldest buildings in Atajate. The public washhouse Lavadero Público de Atajate was built in 1932 and is regarded as an example of the town's vernacular architecture.

Historical Traces at the Fortress and Tower

The historical traces go back even further. On the hill in Atajate known as „El Castillo“ stood an Arab fortress on the old road from Ronda to Algeciras, La Línea and Gibraltar. The Torre de Santa Cruz controlled the route from Ubrique to Atajate and the nearby irrigated areas. The site of the Torre de Santa Cruz contains numerous archaeological remains from prehistoric, Roman and Arab times.

The Torre de Santa Cruz is reached on foot via a path. The Iglesia de San José represents the town's religious architectural history, while El Castillo and the Torre de Santa Cruz represent its military past; the Lavadero Público de Atajate is regarded as an example of vernacular architecture. These different historical references range from prehistoric and Roman times through the Arab period to the church remodelling in the 19th century and the construction of the washhouse in 1932.

Hiking and Via Ferrata in the Valle del Genal Area

For outdoor activities, Atajate offers hiking trails through the mountain landscapes around the Valle del Genal. The hiking network of the Ronda region includes the PR-A 229 trail between Alpandeire and Atajate. Atajate is therefore both part of a regionally named trail connection and one of its two reference points.

Another type of outdoor activity is the Vía Ferrata Atajate. At the beginning, it features a small overhanging section and a lateral traverse, leads across a first monkey bridge and has a long Tibetan bridge as its standout element. Guided via ferrata tours are offered in Atajate, among other places.

Queso de almendra is one of Atajate's culinary specialities. At the Fiesta del Mosto, mosto made from different grape varieties is distributed free of charge to locals and visitors; at the Museo Abierto al Vino, texts, illustrations and tools explain the production process of the wine that is important to the town.
