Discover Guaro: Flamenco, Festivals and Nature

In Guaro, the Día del Almendro, held annually on a Sunday at the end of January, takes guided walks through blossoming almond groves, with explanations of the landscape and vegetation along the way. Two routes are offered for this festival: an easier one for families and a more challenging one for a more adventurous audience.

Culture

The procession route of the Romería de San Isidro begins at the Fuente de San Isidro in the historic centre of Guaro and leads to the saint’s pilgrimage chapel on the banks of the Río Grande. On Sunday, a large paella is prepared for all participants at the Alameda de San Isidro.

The Festival de la Luna Flamenca is a two-day event featuring different performances connected by the art of Flamenco. The performances take place in various squares in the historic centre of Guaro; the Saturday programme includes performances at the Auditorio de la Luna Mora.

Las Mayordomas is a traditional festival in Guaro, celebrated on 7 and 8 December in honour of the Virgen de la Inmaculada Concepción; its origins date back to 1854. The festival concludes with a procession of the image of the Virgin, accompanied by the Mayordomas, the residents of Guaro and numerous visitors.

Guaro’s Belén Viviente is held on 21 December at the Plaza de la Constitución, with around 40 people from Guaro taking part. A building constructed in the 18th century preserves the image of the Cristo de Limpias and offers privileged views of the Sierra. A collection includes an Arab press from the 12th century, one of the oldest in Andalusia.

Food and Drink

The Festival de Gastronomía offers dishes such as conejo a la almendra, caldereta de chivo and galipuche; galipuche is described as a traditional soup from Guaro. The festival also includes a gastronomic tour of Guaro’s bars and restaurants.

At the Festival de Gastronomía, artisans and traders offer honey, olive oil, olives, cured meats, as well as esparto crafts and ceramics.

Nature

Guaro is considered part of the Sierra de las Nieves UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. In Guaro, the Río Grande is considered a birdwatching area and a natural corridor of water and vegetation that provides refuge for a great variety of species.

The Guaro–Puerto Alto route runs between almond trees and along the bed of the Arroyo Seco. It then climbs to viewpoints overlooking the Sierra de las Nieves and Torrecilla, the highest peak in Málaga province.

The Guaro–Chiribenítez hiking trail passes old cortijos and natural viewpoints. The section between Guaro and Monda forms part of the Gran Senda de Málaga.

Guaro has mountain-biking routes across hills, unpaved tracks and historic paths.
