Castillo de la Duquesa and Roman Traces

Castillo de la Duquesa was built in 1767 by Francisco Paulino. The engineer Don Miguel del Castillo was responsible for the floor plan and construction management. The archaeological surroundings of Castillo de la Duquesa are called “Entorno del Castillo de la Duquesa” and are one of two significant archaeological sites in Manilva designated as Bien de Interés Cultural. The Roman archaeological site dates from the 1st to the 5th century AD. The castle stands on the site where a Roman villa previously stood. A visit therefore leads directly from the historic fortress to an older layer of the town, without conflating the two eras.

The Museo Arqueológico Municipal de Manilva displays exclusively objects from the Roman archaeological site “Entorno del Castillo de la Duquesa”. At the Castillo de la Duquesa monument, you can trace the history of Manilva.
