Manilva: Coast, History and Wine-Growing Culture
In Manilva, gentle hills rise gradually inland from the sea. The landscape offers both rural and coastal experiences. Manilva has extensive beaches that stretch for just over eight kilometres. The fine sand slopes gently into the sea.
The directly connected places include San Luis De Sabinillas and La Duquesa.
Coast and Nature
The Reserva Ecológica Playas de Manilva comprises the beaches of Chullera, Toro and Negro. Since the beginning of 2012, these beaches have been designated an ecological reserve to protect their flora and fauna. The Senda Litoral de Málaga runs through Manilva's ecologically protected beaches. At Playa del Toro, a plant forms the most extensive meadow along the entire Costa del Sol.
History and Culture
Los Castillejos de AlcorrÃn is a walled fortress from the 9th century BC. The site combines indigenous elements with construction techniques closely associated with the Phoenician cultural sphere.
The Roman archaeological site around Castillo de la Duquesa includes a necropolis, a villa, baths and a fish-salting factory. This site dates from the 1st to the 5th century AD. The Museo Arqueológico Municipal displays exclusively finds from the Roman site around Castillo de la Duquesa. At the El Castillo de la Duquesa monument, the museum offers a tour. This tour leads through the history of Manilva.
There are two watchtowers in Chullera. The older tower has a cross-shaped ground plan. It dates from the Nasrid period. The present-day parish church of Santa Ana was built from 1776 to 1783.
El Ingenio Chico is a historic sugar factory. Its aqueduct preserves the connection to the rest of the structure. This structure is made of rammed earth. The connection is reminiscent of medieval construction methods and a Moorish building tradition.
Wine and Local Cuisine
CIVIMA has exhibition rooms dedicated to Manilva's wine-growing culture. The rooms focus on traditional and modern winemaking.
La Vendimia takes place on the first weekend of September in the town centre of Manilva. The festival includes pressing the grapes. The year's first must is obtained from the grapes. This must is then tasted.
Moraga is part of Manilva's cuisine. Sardines are traditionally grilled outdoors, usually by the sea. Specially prepared skewers are used for this.
Wines from Manilva can accompany meals. The Moscatel grape gives the wines a distinctive flavour.
Routes through Manilva
The municipality of Manilva prepared a fold-out brochure featuring seven routes. These routes lead through interesting places. The brochure was available at Manilva Town Hall, the mayor's office branch in Sabinillas, and the tourism and sports offices.
