Discover Nerja: Coast, Cave and Culture

Nerja’s coastline is characterised by beaches. Its coastal landscape also includes coves and cliffs. Water sports such as windsurfing and sailing are possible in the coves of Nerja.

Culture

The permanent exhibition of the Museo de Nerja is spread across five rooms. It includes archaeological objects. Ethnographic objects are also part of the exhibits, as are historical documents. The Museo de Nerja presents local history from prehistory to the present day. The tour through all the rooms of the Museo de Nerja has been adapted for people with reduced mobility.

The Baroque Ermita de Nuestra Señora de las Angustias was founded in 1720. The Balcón de Europa is located on the site of the former fortress. The Castillo Bajo de Nerja stood at this location. The castle was built at the beginning of the 16th century.

An engineering structure from the 19th century is still in use. It has four superimposed rows of arcades. At its upper end are entrance temples and a central temple.

Nature

The Cueva de Nerja contains almost all known types of natural formations. Its chambers are spacious and high. The tourist route through the Cueva de Nerja is 546 metres long. It includes 458 steps. One third of the Cueva de Nerja can be visited; specifically, this is the area known as the Galerías Bajas.

The Acantilados de Maro-Cerro Gordo are located between Nerja and Almuñécar. The coastal section is characterised by steep cliffs. Beaches lie between the cliffs. The area also includes small coves. The Acantilados de Maro-Cerro Gordo extend from the Maro coastal watchtower to Cala de Calaiza. They include a stretch of sea of high ecological value. The Acantilados de Maro-Cerro Gordo are designated as a ZEC. They are also designated as a ZEPA and a ZEPIM.

The Jardín Botánico Detunda-Cueva de Nerja presents the local flora. This also includes the vegetation of the Malacitano-Almijarense sector. This sector is characterised by high plant biodiversity. It also has a high degree of endemism.

The coastal landscape therefore combines several clearly defined elements: steep cliffs are followed by beaches and small coves, while the protected stretch of sea complements the coastal section as far as Cala de Calaiza. The designations ZEC, ZEPA and ZEPIM refer to the Acantilados de Maro-Cerro Gordo. In the cave, the Galerías Bajas are the specifically designated area included in the one third that can be visited in total. In the museum, the historical scope extends from prehistory to the present day and combines archaeological, ethnographic and documentary collections.
