Torre del Mar: Coast, Culture and Maritime History

In Torre del Mar, the Municipal School for Nautical Activities at the Club Náutico offers courses in windsurfing, stand-up paddleboarding, and kayaking. The course programme also includes sailing, rowing in a fixed-seat rowing boat, and Optimist sailing.

The Paseo Marítimo connects Torre del Mar with Caleta de Vélez. Torre del Mar’s maritime cuisine includes sardine skewers, which are grilled and served at numerous beach chiringuitos.

Culture

The Club Náutico is an example of the architecture of the Modern Movement from the second half of the 20th century. It represents the uses typical of Torre del Mar as a seafaring and coastal community.

The Iglesia de San Andrés Apóstol is a Modernist church with a basilica-style floor plan. Its interior is deliberately simple, austere, and open. The church houses a depiction of Christ crucified. This depiction was created by Francisco Buiza Fernández, a sculptor and religious woodcarver from Seville.

Casa Larios was built in 1888. Today, the building serves as a cultural and educational centre. At the same time, it is the seat of the Tenencia de Alcaldía of Torre del Mar.

Villa Mercedes is a regionalist house in the Neo-Mudéjar style. In its surroundings on the Paseo de Larios, it is considered the only surviving house of its kind from the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

History

The present-day Faro de Torre del Mar was built in 1976 as an almost thirty-metre-high cylindrical tower. It is a landmark of Torre del Mar’s townscape.

The Faro de la Barraca was built in 1930. It is the third of the five lighthouses that Torre del Mar had.

The Antiguo Castillo de Torre del Mar gave rise to Torre del Mar’s present-day town centre. The coastal fortress was used to monitor the coast and protect boats entering the natural harbour.

The former Nuestra Señora del Carmen sugar factory is an emblematic part of Torre del Mar’s industrial heritage. The central building of the sugar factory has been restored and can now be visited for cultural purposes.

Events

The Weekend Beach Festival is an annual music event held on Torre del Mar beach. National and international artists perform at the festival. It features various genres, including rap, pop, rock, indie, and trap.

Other places include Mezquitilla, Almayate, Trapiche, Benajarafe, Chilches, and Almayate Alto.

Transport

Torre del Mar’s current bus station offers connections to Málaga, Granada, Nerja, and Almuñécar. These destinations include towns and cities on the coast as well as in the surrounding region.
