Culture and History

Cerro de Montecristo is identified with the ancient city of Abdera; the hill contains Phoenician and Roman archaeological remains, including structural remains of a Roman fish-salting factory. Cerro de Montecristo is protected as an asset of cultural interest, while the remains of the fortifications of Villa de Adra are listed as a monument in the category Bien de Interés Cultural.

At the Museo de Adra, the Abdera section displays Phoenician and Roman archaeological artefacts, many of which come from Cerro de Montecristo. The Molino del Lugar, built around 1814 and recently restored, houses the ethnographic section of the Museo de Adra. Another exhibition at the museum explores the history of the Albuferas, their plants and animals, and the people who live there.

Adra’s historic connection with the sea and fishing is presented at the Museo de Adra in an audiovisual 3D exhibition. The Torre de los Perdigones belonged to the San Andrés lead foundry, which operated from 1822 until its decline in 1840.

The town’s history thus spans a period of time: Abdera and the Roman fish-salting factory represent antiquity, the Molino del Lugar the period around 1814, and the San Andrés lead foundry the years from 1822 to 1840. At the museum, these different historical references are presented through archaeological, ethnographic and audiovisual displays.

Nature

The Albufera de Adra is located within the municipality of Adra. Around 140 different species can be observed in the Albuferas de Adra, with the stated number explicitly indicating an approximate order of magnitude.

Trails and Beach

The Sendero Azul San Nicolás is a 913-metre-long hiking trail with a low level of difficulty and an approximate walking time of 20 minutes. The route therefore combines a specific length with a short, approximate walking time and an explicitly low level of difficulty.

The SL A 58 urban trail runs through Adra’s old town, is approximately five kilometres long and takes about two hours to walk. Both trail descriptions therefore state the distance and time required, while the Sendero Azul San Nicolás additionally specifies the level of difficulty.

At Playa de la Caracola, activities such as diving and fishing are possible because of its rocky seabed.

Local Life

The Ruta del Mediodía passes through various streets and squares where you can sample dishes from Adra’s cuisine while enjoying traditional tapas. The festival of San Marcos is celebrated every year on 25 April and includes an offering of fruit and vegetables.

At the Museo de Adra, you can learn how to prepare the typical dish “atascaburras” using a virtual board.
