La Breña in Lubrín – Mediterranean mountain landscape and mountain biking routes

Landscape

La Breña is located in Lubrín, in the foothills of the Sierra de los Filabres and in a Mediterranean mountain landscape typical of these foothills.

La Breña in Lubrín is designated as rural accommodation. Its development is linked to the traditional agriculture and livestock farming of the comarca.

Cycling

The “Sierras de Almería” Extreme BTT Circuit offered two routes in Lubrín: a 62-kilometre route for advanced amateurs and a 38-kilometre route for beginners.

A BTT route in Lubrín described in 2013 was 37.45 kilometres long and followed a circuit. This BTT loop ran mainly along unpaved tracks, as well as through ramblas and along paved sections.

At kilometre 11.6, the route reached the Breña 1 junction.

On a BTT route in Lubrín, a climb began that passed through the cortijadas of Los Alonso, La Breña, Los Braulios and Los Jarales, as well as over Cerro Vaquero; Cerro Vaquero was the highest point of the route.

One route of the “Sierras de Almería” Extreme BTT Circuit passed through the Cortijada La Breña in Lubrín.

The second stage of the VIII Vuelta Ciclista a Almería passed the Cruce de La Breña junction at kilometre 26.1; the stated elevation was 441 metres.

The 2025 Vuelta Ciclo-deportiva Costa de Almería passed the Cruce de La Breña junction at kilometre 63.7; the stated elevation was 444 metres.

Culture

Lubrín is home to the Centro de Interpretación de la Alimentación Rural, which is open to visitors.

The Cortijo La Breña was built in 1920, completely renovated in 2003 and preserves traditional elements of its former inhabitants.

The area around La Breña in Lubrín was historically associated with marble extraction, which continued until the end of the 1960s.

Traditional dishes and ingredients of Lubrín’s pedanías include migas con remojón, wheat, prickly pears, hearts of palm and almonds.

The Fiesta del Pan in honour of San Sebastián took place in Lubrín on 19 and 20 January 2019; during this festival, loaves of bread were thrown from balconies as offerings, and participants also competed during the procession to catch as many roscos as possible.

Family activities and hiking

Lubrín’s tourism offerings for families include nature activities for parents and children, as well as several types of family routes, including a route with lunch.

According to its description, the El Pilar–Benizalón hiking route passes through several cortijadas, including La Breña.

The route appears to run along the southern boundary on the inner side of the Sierra de los Filabres; at certain points, views to the south from rocky outcrops or terrain edges can be expected.
