Llano de los Olleres: Church, Festivals and Ruta del Agua

In Llano de los Olleres stands the Iglesia Parroquial y Votiva de Nuestra Señora del Carmen del Llano de los Olleres, whose origins date back to a vow made by local residents during the cholera epidemic of 1860. Construction of the church lasted from 1869 to 1872. The church has a single-nave layout and a gallery. A century-old iron grille separates the altar platform. The main altarpiece was designed by the Molina brothers. It contains a painting by Rosa María Pardo Mármol. The church contains three Portuguese-style ceramic altarpieces. There are also important religious images and paintings from the 18th century. The church was granted parish church status on 3 September 1973. On 16 December 2017, it was consecrated after several restorations and a complete renewal of its furnishings. In 2018, the Mayordomía de Nuestra Señora del Carmen was established to oversee religious devotion and care for the church.

Festivals

The main festivals of Llano de los Olleres are celebrated on 16 July, the solemnity of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. Festivals in honour of Saint Anthony of Padua are also celebrated in Llano de los Olleres. The calendar of the Ayuntamiento de Albox lists the Fiestas del Llano de los Olleres for 15 May. During the visits of the Pequeñica to Albox, which take place every five years, the holy image is venerated in the church in Llano de los Olleres. During the traditional festivals in honour of Saint Isidore, residents of Albox travelled in a romería to the settlement of Llano de los Olleres, following the course of the Rambla de Oria. At a celebration associated with the church in Llano de los Olleres, the choir sang traditional melodies from the Misas de Gozo with Coplas written especially for the occasion.

Water and Trails

The Los Pozos del Llano de los Olleres formerly collected and regulated the water from the springs of Llano de los Olleres and La Chinica; they are no longer in use today. The Los Pozos del Llano de los Olleres are an emblematic historic site in Albox, reached by the Ruta del Agua. The Ruta del Agua reaches Llano de los Olleres after 3.7 kilometres. At Llano de los Olleres, the Ruta del Agua divides again. At the fork, the right-hand variant of the Ruta del Agua follows the rambla. From a viewpoint on the Ruta del Agua overlooking Llano de los Olleres, it is possible to see the junction of the rambla with the Cañada de Bentandux and the extensive reed beds there.
