San Isidro de Níjar: Colonisation Architecture and Festival Traditions

History and Architecture

San Isidro de Níjar was founded in the 1950s and 1960s as a colonisation settlement; the design was created in 1959 by the architect Agustín Delgado de Robles. The two-storey settler houses in San Isidro de Níjar correspond to those in Atochares and are regarded as examples of modern architecture. Their façades are characterised by arrangements of closed and open surfaces. At the entrance there is a porch, while upstairs there is a terrace. The windows are offset to the sides and arranged asymmetrically. In this way, the architecture is expressed not only in the height of the houses, but also in the deliberate combination of different façade surfaces and clearly structured building elements.

The colonisation village has a square that opens towards the street or the landscape. Its first row of houses contains the most representative buildings. The square therefore combines the town's orientation towards the street with an open view of the landscape, while the first row of houses forms the architecturally emphasised edge.

Open Space in the Town Centre

Parque de Las Berlingas is a publicly accessible open space in the centre of San Isidro de Níjar. Covering 3,600 square metres, the park includes play areas for children and older people, as well as areas for walking. The different areas are located within the same public open space and combine play, leisure and movement. For outdoor performances, Parque de Las Berlingas has an amphitheatre with seating for 184 people. Thus, in addition to freely accessible park areas, the site also includes a clearly designated venue.

Festivals and Semana Santa

The traditional patron saint festivals in honour of San Isidro Labrador continue to be held in San Isidro de Níjar year after year. These festivals include a Holy Mass followed by a procession. The procession is accompanied by the band of the Asociación Cultural Níjar. The sequence of Mass, procession and musical accompaniment shapes the religious part of the festival programme. The patron saint festivals also include the Concurso Gastronómico San Isidro.

San Isidro de Níjar is one of the central locations of Níjar's Semana Santa. The programme of Níjar's Semana Santa includes a Stations of the Cross procession in San Isidro de Níjar. In addition to the patron saint festivals, Holy Week is therefore also associated with its own religious event in the town.

Location and Everyday Life

San Isidro de Níjar is located on the Almería–Vera road. The town currently has facilities and everyday services such as a pharmacy, a petrol station, banks, a medical centre, a swimming pool, a social services centre, the CADE and numerous shops. The facilities mentioned therefore include medical and social services, as well as provisions, mobility and everyday errands.
