Archaeology and coastal history

Villaricos combines archaeological traces with beaches and maritime uses. The Enclave Arqueológico de Villaricos in Cuevas del Almanzora (Almería) preserves the remains of the ancient Phoenician city of Baria. The area of the Enclave Arqueológico de Villaricos open to visitors mainly comprises the necropolis with monumental hypogeal tombs from the Phoenician-Punic period. The restored Castillo de Villaricos has been transformed into a museum area with updated content, interactive reconstructions and immersive visual displays. Its interpretation centre explains the development of coastal fortifications. Today, the Castillo de Villaricos serves as a viewpoint with information panels and digital resources. This provides different perspectives for on-site observation: archaeological evidence, fortified coastline and a viewpoint with digital interpretation.

The local history also includes the Las Herrerías–Villaricos mine railway. It operated from April 1897 to 1958 and transported ore from the mining areas to the loading point on Villaricos beach. The Fundiciones de la Costa de Villaricos comprise the remains of former coastal foundries with ore-washing facilities and are connected with the smelting of ore extracted from the Sierra Almagrera. The industrial side of the town can therefore be understood through transport, the loading point and smelting. These three terms form a coherent chain in the history of mining.

Beaches and water

At the water’s edge, Villaricos presents several types of landscape. Playa de Villaricos stretches to the mouth of the Almanzora River and includes Cala de la Esperanza, Cala Verde and Villaricos (Cala de la Luz Eléctrica). Cala Verde is a small town beach with dark gravel and calm water, protected by natural rocks and natural reefs. Cala de las Conchas is a natural refuge with crystal-clear water and fine sand, surrounded by the striking cliffs of the Sierra Almagrera. For choosing a coastal focus, the coves therefore differ in their seabed, appearance of the water and surroundings, creating two clearly identifiable focal points for observation.

Harbour and activities

The Puerto de Villaricos harbour is also part of the townscape. It has 70 berths for boats between 5 and 12 metres long. Puerto de Villaricos also offers boat hire. Along the coast, Cala Verde provides opportunities for snorkelling, while Cala de las Conchas offers opportunities for snorkelling and diving. This distinction is useful for travel planning when the day’s focus is to be on coastal features, snorkelling, diving or boats.

The restored castle and the historic mine railway open up two levels of observation: museum interpretation and coastal fortification on the one hand, and mining and transport history on the other. This distinction helps to weigh cultural interests and coastal activities separately when planning the day.
