Terque: Museums, Church and Historical Traces

The Museos de Terque offer a two-hour guided route through five institutions: the Museo Etnográfico, the Museo Provincial de la Uva del Barco, La Modernista, the Museo de la Escritura Popular and the Cueva de San José.

The Museo Etnográfico is located in a late-19th-century townhouse belonging to the Ayuntamiento de Terque. Through its exhibition rooms, you can learn about Terque’s historic occupations and domestic living spaces, as well as the religious, social and political life of its comarca.

The Museo de la Escritura Popular and its archive are housed in the Casa de los Yebra and today preserve more than 10,000 letters and documents of this kind. La Modernista is a century-old textile shop dedicated in the Museos de Terque to the history of clothing and fabrics.

The Museo Provincial de la Uva del Barco is dedicated to parral cultivation in the province of Almería, as well as to the history of growing and marketing table grapes, known as Uva del Barco. The parral established there serves as an educational and entertaining visitor area where you can stroll and observe the development of the parral throughout the year.

The Cueva de San José, inaugurated in 2011, is a cultural space belonging to the Ayuntamiento de Terque for exhibitions, concerts and conferences.

The five stops are spread across different historical and cultural contexts. The late-19th-century townhouse, the century-old textile shop, the archive in the Casa de los Yebra and the Cueva de San José, inaugurated in 2011, each preserve their own forms of local memory. As a result, written documents, clothing and fabrics, domestic living spaces, political and social topics, and parral cultivation in the province of Almería stand side by side.

The subjects of the individual buildings also differ significantly: the Museo de la Escritura Popular focuses on letters and documents, while La Modernista presents the history of clothing and fabrics. At the Museo Provincial de la Uva del Barco, the cultivation and marketing of Uva del Barco are also part of the exhibition. The parral complements these themes as a visitor area designed to showcase its development throughout the year.

Townscape

The Iglesia de Santiago Apóstol was built in the Mudéjar style. Its main chapel is separated from the nave by a transverse arch, and its wooden roof consists of an undecorated limas structure.

A tourist walking route recommends exploring Terque on foot to visit the town’s townhouses. For a museum visit, a free public car park at the entrance to Terque is recommended, approximately 200 metres from the Museo Etnográfico.

Cisterns and wall remnants of the former Muslim fortification have been preserved on Cerro de Marchena. Tombstones with Kufic inscriptions are also associated with Cerro de Marchena.

The historical traces on Cerro de Marchena therefore complement the townscape with preserved structural elements of the former Muslim fortification and the tombstones with Kufic inscriptions associated with the hill. In the town centre, they are contrasted by the Mudéjar church with its clearly described construction.

Landscape

Terque lies on the eastern edge of the Parque Natural de Sierra Nevada.
