Nature and Trails

The Vía Verde del Hierro follows a disused railway line from 1894 through the municipality of Serón and is now a non-motorised route suitable for walking or cycling.

The route is 11.8 kilometres long and has only gentle slopes.

The old railway facilities of the Vía Verde del Hierro have been renovated for complementary facilities such as a restaurant, an exhibition and concert hall, and a museum.

These include the station building, the locomotive shed and the warehouse with its loading ramp.

The Las Menas Local Trail is a circular route through the mining settlement of Las Menas.

It passes the most prominent points of the settlement.

The Serón panoramic trail leads to the Balsa de la Alconaiza and onwards to a viewpoint in the Alconaiza area.

This viewpoint was established on a former threshing floor and features an information panel.

Starry Skies

The Serón Planetarium offers live educational events.

The events cover astronomy, geoscience, the history of astronomy and cultural astronomy.

There are also observations of the night sky using telescopes and binoculars.

These observations cover constellations, planets, the Moon when visible, and deep-sky objects.

Culture and History

Serón Castle was built in the 13th century in the province of Almería.

During the Nasrid period, the castle served a defensive function.

Serón Castle offers panoramic views of the Almanzora Valley and the Sierra de las Estancias.

The Church of the Annunciation is a 17th-century building and was declared a national historic-artistic monument in 1983.

The church’s central nave features a Lima-Bordón roof framework decorated with eight-pointed star motifs and square interlacing.

The Ermita de los Remedios is a neoclassical 19th-century building with a rectangular floor plan and a single nave.

The main chapel of the Ermita de los Remedios houses an image of the Virgen de los Remedios.

Calle Real is the main street surrounding the historic centre.

El Aljibe is a natural hot-water spring near the settlement of Fuencaliente.

The viewpoint at the Ermita Virgen de la Cabeza overlooks the Vega of Serón, which occupies the alluvial deposits of the Almanzora Valley.

Las Menas is a mining settlement with architecturally distinguished buildings.

These buildings include the Ermita de Santa Bárbara, a hospital, offices, a workers’ pavilion, workshops, and several houses for senior staff and technicians.

Festivals and Local Products

The meat-processing industry has been developing in Serón since the 18th century.

Jamón de Serón has a protected geographical indication.

The Feria del Jamón has been held on the first weekend of July since 1995.

This fair includes a national ham-carving competition and public tastings of the freshly sliced products.
