Culture and Local History

The Villa de Vícar, also known as Vícar pueblo, is the historic centre of the municipality; the façades of its buildings feature murals with poems and stories, as well as colourful designs. The Iglesia Fortaleza de Vícar was built between 1558 and 1570. Its tower and battlements give it a distinctly fortified character; on 29 June 1985, it was declared a Monumento and designated a Bien de Interés Cultural.

At the foot of the Sierra de Gádor lies the Roman Hidráulico Carcauz complex, consisting of aqueducts and irrigation channels. It includes the Acueducto de los 20 ojos, the Acueducto por Rematar and the Acueducto de los Poyos. The Vía Ferrata de Vícar runs around the Barranco de Carcauz, is rated K3–K4 and passes beneath the Acueducto de los Poyos.

“Paseando entre Velas” reached its twelfth edition in 2026 and has attracted thousands of visitors for more than a decade; the event is firmly established as an event in Andalusian astrotourism. During it, Vícar’s emblematic corners are illuminated by thousands of candles, accompanied by live music and street performances. Vícar also maintains a year-round calendar of festivals that brings together tradition, public participation and local celebrations.

The Carnaval de Vícar traditionally includes children’s and adults’ fancy-dress competitions, musical performances, DJ sessions and the Entierro de la Sardina parade. Semana Santa includes liturgical celebrations and processions organised by local brotherhoods. On Easter Sunday, the traditional procession of San Benito takes place in the Villa de Vícar. The Teatro Auditorio Ciudad de Vícar offers theatre performances for adults and children.

Nature and Landscapes

The Peñón de Bernal is of considerable scenic value and offers panoramic views across the Poniente almeriense. Traditional climbing on existing routes is permitted there only with prior authorisation; climbing, abseiling and similar sports or active-tourism activities are prohibited from December to May.

The Fuente del Tartel supplies fresh drinking water from a spring fed through the Complejo Hidráulico de Carcauz. The area around the Barranco del Tartel is visited by hikers, mountain bikers and nature lovers. The Rincones con Encanto initiative provides wooden benches at particularly attractive spots along Vícar’s routes, where visitors can rest, enjoy panoramic views and take in the area’s cultural heritage.

Routes and Active Experiences

The Bulevar Ciudad de Vícar is a more than four-kilometre-long promenade characterised by trees and green spaces, with sculptures and monuments that can be experienced as an open-air museum. The Conjuros de Vícar route is a more than twelve-kilometre circular trail starting and ending in the Villa de Vícar. It leads to the municipality’s most significant viewpoints and, on the descent, follows the old Roman road.

The Ruta de los Bancos promotes active tourism and passes through part of the Sierra de Gádor as well as various sights in Vícar. The municipality also offers a local programme with signposted routes through different landscapes; it is not a competition, but a personal challenge.

The Vícar Bárbara is a mountain-bike event starting and finishing at the Palacio de Deportes Ciudad de Vícar. The Vícar Bárbara 2026 course was 54 kilometres long and included 1,500 metres of ascent.

Family and Golf

The Parque de la Infancia covers 7,000 square metres and is divided into three themed areas. The Vícar Doméstico area recreates traditional buildings from the municipality, such as aqueducts, typical houses and the town hall, and offers a walk-through tour for young children.

La Envía Golf is located on the slopes of the Sierra de Gádor and offers views of the Bay of Almería. The facility has an 18-hole golf course with a par of 70.
